Show 6- in foreign ore prices are partly related to competitive conditions "but even more closely related to charter rates for ocean shipping. OCEAN SHIPPING Ocean shipping is an industry that is really having its problems and is experiencing one of its severest recessions. The tramp operator has never had it so tough since the end of the war. This condition is brought about by a decline in the international movement of goods and by the impact of new large and more efficient ships which have rendered the Liberties and Victories marginal vessels. A new 15,000 tonner doing 15 knots will take the place of two 10,000 ton liberties doing 10 knots, while a 40,000 tonner will replace 6 Liberties. As a result of these two factors rates have been driven down to the point where the less efficient vessels are being laid up and probably will continue to go into mothballs for the balance of the year. Our shipping people see little improvement in sight before 1960. |
