Show 7 - that Stanford has made on the academic front is encouraging indeed, and the esteem in which Stanford is held can be measured in some degree by factors outside of the University. First, we have the high school graduates who are receiving scholarships and therefore fairly free to apply to the university of their choice. This year among the high school graduates who received national honor scholarships, students with impressive records in the scientific fields and intending to pursue scientific work in their college programs picked Stanford among the first four universities in the country as the university of their choice. Second, the larger corporations functioning either independently or through such organizations formed to study the problem have recognized increasingly an obligation to support private education. With a typical business-man's approach they have first carefully studied the major universities throughout the country in order to determine which appeared most worthy of their financial support, and Stanford will always be found among the first ten great universities of the country. Third, the large foundations concerned with giving financial support to higher education also make a professional appraisal of the universities under consideration, and, here again, the increasing support given to Stanford by these foundations is a heartening testimonial to our academic progress. In electrical engineering Stanford ranks as one of the top two or three universities of the country, possibly second only to M.I.T., and in some special areas of engineering Stanford stands clearly first. In the field of physics Stanford again stands among the best five or six institutions in the country and its contribution to the field of high energy physics has been outstanding.
