Show Student Affairs Student Affairs hosted by the Career Planning, Cooperative Education, and Placement Center for the express purpose of giving Weber State students the broadest and most direct access to the job market possible. Placement —Through its professional staff, the Career Development and Services Center provides placement counseling and employee selection education for any student desiring career employment. Hundreds of national and local business, industry and public service agencies actively recruit through the Center each year. In addition, Utah State Job Service assistance is available to all students within the Center. The Career Development and Services Center maintains a career information library of current resource material and company information from firms and agencies as well as graduate school and scholarship information. A computerized tracking system is also on line to follow-up on graduates to learn more about their success or to assist in adjusting future career direction. COUNSELING CENTER Purpose —The purpose of the Counseling Center is to contribute to student development in emotional, social and career areas through programs initiated by the Center itself. Assistance is provided through curricular planning, class scheduling, and sometimes monitoring individual student progress. Occasionally student encounter circumstances that induce frustration, stress, and personal disruption. Assistance with these conditions generates emotional growth. Conducting needs assessment surveys allows the Counseling Center to initiate programs to facilitate growth in social, and career areas. The most direct service to students comes through some o:f the following interventions Test and Math Anxiety Desensitization Working with academic standards students Communications Skills Training Assertiveness Training Career Self-Exploration Workshops Values Clarification Workshops Decision-Making Workshops Divorce Adjustment Workshops Individual Counseling Science Anxiety Clinics Stress Management Workshops Time Management Workshops Couples Communication Workshops Developing Social Skills and Overcoming Shyness Self-Defeating Behavior Workshops Counselors —Counselors in the Counseling Center include persons from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds who are trained in counseling, psychology, and other fields related to the helping professions. Assistance in any of the aspects of personal development noted above can be obtained by scheduling an appointment through the Center receptionist. The Counseling Center is located in the basement of the Library. 56 Psychiatric Service —A psychiatrist serves as a consultant to the Counseling Center and is available for limited psychiatric assistance through referral by and conjoint treatment with a member of the Counseling Center statt. r ~r -jpjMfr- Information | | , TESTING CENTER The Weber State College Testing Center offers a variety of standardized tests for the purpose of placement, evaluation of achievement and granting of credit. In addition, aptitude, interest, personality and intelligence tests are given as aids to counselors in helping students select a major or deal with personal concerns relevant to college adjustment. The following national testing programs which are of particular interest to students are also administered by the Testing Center. 1. American College Test (ACT) —The ACT test is required of all new freshmen students for admission to the college. It is recommended that they take the test early in their senior year of high school in order to meet scholarship deadlines. a. National ACT tests are given five times each year at testing centers in all states and in many foreign countries. The 1983-84 test dates are October 29, December 10, February 11, March 31 and June 9. Test dates for the 1984-85 school year were not available at the time of this publication but will later be available at the WSC Testing Center. Registration deadlines are approximately four weeks before the test dates. Registration packets may be obtained from high schools, the WSC Testing Center or by writing ACT Registration, P.O. Box 414, Iowa City, Iowa 52240. b. Residual ACT tests are given several times prior to the beginning of each quarter for students who will be attending WSC and did not take the national ACT test. Students should contact the WSC Testing Center for specific test dates. Registration for the residual ACT may be completed by paying the test fee at the Testing Center at least two days before the test. 2. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) —A maximum of 46 credits in the general education area requirements may be earned for satisfactory scores on General Exams in English Composition, Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Additional credit may be granted for satisfactory scores on CLEP Subject Exams. The exams are offered on the third Saturday of each month. Registration forms are available in the Testing Center 3. General Education Development (GED) —People who have not graduated from high school may take the GED tests for partial fulfillment of the application requirements for admission to WSC. To take the test, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age and the high school class with which he/she attended must have graduated. Evidence of the class having graduated must be provided if the applicant is 18 years old. The exams are offered each week.
