Show Education Program :Teaching of Reading Minor I. General Requirements: A. Students planning to pursue this reading program should contact the reading instructor in the School of Education. B. An overall GPA of 2.50 is required. II. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 26 credit hours for Reading minors. B. Education courses required: Education 321 (3), 340 (3), 459 (3), 465 (3), 466 (3), 478* (5). C. Support courses required: 1. Communication 211 (2) or English 381 (3) or English 383 (3). 2. At least two of the following: English 104 (2) or 107 (2); English 330 (3) or 331 (3); Communication 107 (3) or 207 (3); Education 460 (3), 469 (3). D. Students are encouraged to seek the Resource Endorsement along with this minor. 'The instructor's written permission is required for registration in this course. Program: Resource Endorsement I. General Requirements: A. Students in the Teaching of Reading program can earn the Resource Endorsement from the Utah State Office of Education by completing additional course work in consultation with their adviser. Other Elementary and Secondary Education majors must complete all of the courses outlined below. This endorsement qualifies the holder as a resource teacher to be employed in this field at any level from kindergarten through twelfth grade. II. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 40 credit hours in Education courses are required. B. Education courses required: , 321 (3) and 340 (3), or 325 (6); 459 (3), 460 (3), 464 (3), 465 (3), 466 (3), 469 (3),477 (5), 478 (5), 479 (5). C. The requirements for the Resource Endorsement may change as the program is revised to meet the needs of the employing districts and state certification requirements. 218 DEPARTMENT OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION Cordell Perkes, Chairperson Students preparing to teach in the elementary schools, first grade through grade six, major in Elementary Education and will graduate from the School of Education. Elementary Education majors do not have a minor, but have one or more areas of emphasis. Students preparing to teach in preschool programs or kindergarten through third grade select the Early Childhood major. This program is described under the Department of Child and Family Studies. The Director of Advisement in Teacher Education and faculty members from the Department of Elementary Education are available to advise each prospective teacher. Elementary Education majors should begin planning their programs early. B. D. E. Program: Elementary Education Major — Bachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. Specific course requirements of the college (see index). Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). A minor is not required. One or two areas of emphasis replaces a minor. Satisfy the admission requirements for Teacher Education. Elementary Education majors must have a GPA of 2.50 or better in Professional Elementary Education courses as well as an overall GPA of 2.50. F. 183 total hours are required for this degree. G. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). II. Specific Requirements (minimum of 43 credit hours): A. Professional Education courses required: Education 195 (1), 300 (3), 324 (4), 325 (6), 326 (6), 360 (4), 488 (15), 498 (4). B. Academic Emphases Each Elementary Education major will also be expected to select one or two areas of emphasis. This requirement can be satisfied by completing 40 credit hours in one academic area, or completing 20 credit hours in each of two areas.
