Show Services of the College number along with information students provide their draft board will determine when and if they will be drafted. Student College Deferment—A student may be deferred under a II-S classification if he is pursuing a full-time course of instruction and makes proportional progress towards his degree each year. If a student is interested in a college deferment, he should contact his Selective Service Board within one month before his nineteenth birthday, and complete proper forms which will supply evidence of his registration at the college to his Selective Service Board. ROTC Program-The College offers an Aerospace ROTC Program through the University of Utah. For further information see the Weber State College Catalog, Department of Aerospace Studies. Reserve Programs—Students may prefer to meet their obligation by joining a reserve or national guard unit. Direct contact should be made with the unit in which the student is interested. For further information regarding military service obligations and college deferments, contact the Assistant Dean of Students who is the Military Adviser on campus. PLACEMENT CENTER The Weber State College Placement Center is a service organization. The Center is dedicated to uphold the aims and the objectives developed through the College Placement Council; "Service to the student; service to the employer; service to the institution." Specific functions of the Placement Center are: (1) to offer career counseling to all students, especially those who haven't determined an academic major; (2) to assist prospective graduates in securing career employment; (3) to assist students in securing part-time employment while attending college; (4) to supplement the information and suggestions provided by academic departments to students desiring to do graduate work. The Placement Center cooperates and works closely with various representatives of local business and industry in addition to the Utah Employment Security Office. The Center is also the coordinating agency between students and the many school districts, business.industrial and governmental organizations from many areas of the United States. The Placement Center maintains current and accurate information concerning employment and occupational trends both nationally and locally. 88 Services of the College UPWARD BOUND Upward Bound—The Upward Bound Program at Weber State College is designed to prepare high school students from poverty surroundings for post high school education. Ninety students from the eleventh and twelfth grades from Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, Duchesne and Uintah counties are selected and involved in the twelve-month program. To be eligible for the Upward Bound Program, a student must be attending a high school within a 50-mile radius of Weber State College and come from a low income family. Applications and further information may be obtained from the Upward Bound Office. This program is funded by the Federal Government except for limited matching funds provided by the College. VETERANS' SERVICE Veterans Coordinator—It is necessary that all veterans who attended Weber State College under one of the Public Laws clear through the Assistant Dean of Students, who is the Veterans Coordinator. Veterans may receive guidance and counseling r&- lated to educational opportunities afforded by the public laws and the programs offered by Weber State College. Those with problems in registering or any other special problems should contact the above office. THE WEBER STATE COLLEGE UNION Weber State College Union—The Weber State College Union is the social-cultural, and recreational center of the campus for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. All student government facilities, offices and council rooms are located in the Union. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests are encouraged ta use the facilities and services. Reservations for meeting spaces and other facilities should be made well in advance. A list of services are available at the Weber State College Union. All groups using the facilities are required to observe Union policy. Those groups who do not observe Union policy will be excluded from using the facilities. Staff members working directly with the students are: the Director of the Union and Student Activities, Assistant Union Director, the Coordinator of Student Activities, and Coordinator °f Student Government. 89 |
