Show Services of the College Students serving on Union Activities Committees are provided opportunities for growth in human development. Union committees available are: Arts and Crafts, Dance, Exhibits, Films, Games, Hospitality, Lectures, Married Students, Music and Talent, and Special Events. Associated Students—The Associated Students operate under the AS WSC Constitution, which has established three branches: the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch. The ASWSC provides the opportunity for students to serve either as an elected student officer or on several committees. Elected student officers include the studentbody president, vice presidents, and senators. ASWSC committees include Leadership, Elections, Spirit, Community Service, Orientation and SEED (student tutoring service). Community Service Bureau—The Weber State College Community Service Bureau has been organized to maintain public relations for Weber State College; to provide an outlet for campus talent and develop student participants and to serve the community. Under supervision of the Community Service Bureau, lists of current talent are compiled and available for community organizations. All students are invited to apply to studentbody officers, to the committee chairmen, or the Union Staff for assignments to these committees. OTHER SERVICES Academic Advisement—At the time of admission to Weber State College, every student is assigned to a faculty adviser in his major field, in General Education, or in Guided Studies. Through an appropriately assigned adviser, guidance is available for each student as he plans his registration schedules and moves towards a degree of his choice or towards a certificate program. When a student is placed in Guided Studies, or on academic probation, he is assigned a counselor in the Counseling and Testing Center. A student may seek assistance from his adviser or counselor with any educational or personal problem at any time. For information concerning Academic Advisement, inquire at the Office of Advisement. Bookstore—The College Bookstore, located on the ground floor of the Union Building, is the source for all college text books 90 Services of the College and supplies. The bookstore will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. The evening hours will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday and Tuesday of each week. During the first week of the quarter the bookstore is open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Buildings and Grounds Service—For the student's class work and activities the College provides an adequate physical plant and a buildings and grounds staff which maintain an environment that is comfortable, healthful, and wholesome. College Library—The Library provides a rich store of printed materials especially selected to serve students and faculty. The collection, continually growing in cultural value, includes more than 150,000 volumes in addition to a working library of pamphlets, documents and bibliographical aids. The College, through its library service, subscribes to approximately 1,400 literary, scientific and educational periodicals, as well as to state and national newspapers. In addition, the Library houses several special collections, most noteworthy of which is the Howell collection of approximately 12,000 volumes. This collection, willed to the College by the late Judge James A. Howell, consists mostly of eighteenth and nineteenth century American literature. The Library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fridays; 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays; 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sundays; closed holidays. Community Services—Weber State College recognizes its role as a participant in the total community and strives to fulfill its responsibilities as a participant. The College's faculty and staff serve on boards and committees within the community setting. The College, through Continuing Education, offers services and facilities in planning and implementing conferences and institutes. Evening and off-campus offerings are designed to meet the academic and interest needs of both degree and non-degree persons. Other areas of service in Continuing Education include special vocational and adult basic education programs, consultation in community-related problems, and research. Museums—A large collection of mammals, birds, amphibia, reptiles, insects, and other animals is maintained by the Department of Zoology. Numerous species from Utah and western states are included in the collection. Frequent field trips to selected desert and mountain regions constantly augment the specimens used for study. 91 |
