Show Marriott-Slaterville plans new park behind city building By Joyce VanTassell Correspondent A new park is planned for the land located behind the new city and senior center building in Marriott-Slaterville. On May 18, Brent Perkes, a member of the park committee, presented the committee's ideas to the city council. Other committee members are John Saunders, Dorothy Slater, and Linda and Val Currie. Perkes showed the council the conceptual plans the committee was recommending. The committee got quite a bit of community feedback and tried to fit those requests in their plans for the park. The committee also considered utility, safety and cost maintenance in their plans. Perkes said many citizens asked for a walkway in the park and also requested trees for shade. The park committee is recommending a paved walkway around the perimeter of the park, with trees also located largely on the perimeter. Other proposed features include a restroom and water fountain, a natural amphitheatre (with a speaker system and lights), picnic areas, pergolas, horse shoe pits and a play area. Another feature is an enlarged group gathering area adjacent to the patio. Perkes estimated the cost to develop the park would be about $180,000. This cost could be less if community volunteers helped out. The council briefly discussed the advantage of adding a bowery to the plan and accepted the general footprint and plans from the committee and sent it to the planning commission for further consideration. Council Chair Dennis Ilium thanked Perkes and the committee for their hard work on the plan for the new park.
