Show June 2006 As June brings us the beginning of summer, it also brings us summer fun. Free tennis lessons for residents are available all summer. Rackets and balls will be available at no cost at the DDO tennis courts. Lessons will be taught once a week in the morning, with the times and days dependent on the number of players. Those interested can sign up at the City office on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The first Music at the Park evening for the season was held on June 26 at the Marriott Park, commencing at 7:00 p.m. It was a night to remember as a talented group, the Salt Lake Harmony Singers, entertained us with a program of songs for all members of the family. Refreshments were served at the conclusion of the concert. Plans were announced for the community July 4th celebration, again with highly capable Pam Slater as chair. The fun begins on Monday, July 3rd, with the Eighth Annual Marriott-Slaterville Golf Tournament, with tee times between 4:00-7:00 p.m., at Mulligans Golf Course. Danny Brown is in charge of this event. Also on July 3rd, the Little Miss Firecracker Pageant will be held. It is open to Marriott-Slaterville children 6, 7 and 8 years old. Lori Jones is in charge, and entry deadline is June 8. On July 4th The Freedom Celebration will begin with breakfasts at both the Marriott and Slaterville Parks at 8:00 a.m. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. going from 700 South on 1200 West to the Marriott Park. For lunch there will be hamburgers and hot dogs cooked by council members at the Marriott Park. There will be games, a giant slide, candy cannons, contests, including pie eating, prizes, and an auction benefitting the Senior Center. Judy Fuller is in charge of the auction. A baby contest, conducted by Lori Jones, will be held in the afternoon for Marriott-Slaterville children under age 2. Sounds like a wonderful weekend for all of us as we celebrate the birth of our great country. There were smiles and congratulations at the city offices with the birth of Chandler William Morris, son of City Administrator William Morris and his wife Erin. The much anticipated birth was on June 10, 2006, and baby, mother (and father) are doing well. At the June 15, 2006, council meeting, business licenses were approved for Sandworks, 812 West 1700 South, Unit A, assembly of off-road vehicles; J C O Enterprises, 2296 West Pioneer Road, wholesale products, and Perfect Panes, 360 South 2100 West, window cleaning and home improvement. Concerns of nearby residents about Sandworks driving off-road vehicles and racing cars on 1700 South, were discussed. The business owner agreed that they would not drive or race off-road vehicles on 1700 South in at manner that would disturb neighbors. We welcome these new businesses to our community, and wish them success in their endeavors. Mayor Keith Butler presented Greg Lewis with a plaque thanking him for his hard volunteer work on the detention basin on 700 South. Administrator Bill Morris displayed an overhead transparency of various storm water detention basins in other municipalities. The preferred option is to have regional basins also serve as parks. He suggested that the regional basin on 700 South at the Willard Canal include a park. Greg Lewis was commissioned earlier to head the committee to design the park, with Randy Phipps, Paula Okey, and Mrs. Lewis as committee members. They would have liked to use the basin for a baseball |
