Show What Next for Duct Tape April 10, 2006 Fairytale of the tape It was very hot, but also very, very cool It was hot, it was sticky, but most of all it was fun. Her duct tape dress and my duct tape suit brought a lot of stares and questions as we went through the night as Cinderella and Prince Charming for the recent Fremont High School prom. Numerous little girls came up to my date, Lindsey Slater, a Fremont senior, wanting to meet Cinderella (none of them wanted to meet Prince Charming). So as she signed autographs, I waited patiently for our dinner to arrive. More than one person wanted to know how long it took us to make the outfits. The answer? Too long. And everyone wanted to know why we did it. It started out as a scholarship opportunity. Go to prom in duct tape and you can win Duck tape brand's Stuck at Prom Scholarship, $6,000 to the winning couple. That was the original idea anyway, but after looking at past entries I decided not to get my hopes up and to just have fun. Making the outfits was probably the easiest part of the whole experience. Seven rolls went into my tux and six rolls went into Lindsey's dress. With Quenton Jones TX. Fremont High the help of Lindsey's mother, clear duct tape was used to cover blue fabric to make Lindsey's dress while my pants were made from scratch, and my jacket was covered with white duct tape. The hardest part of the night was walking around in seven rolls of nonbreathable duct tape. From dinner to the dance, we waddled around getting stares (of jealousy, I might add) from countless onlookers. And I must apologize to Lindsey. A tux that doesn't breath, combined with a dance full of people, doesn't equal a very "cool" date. For some strange reason duct tape has captured the hearts and minds of the American people. "When in doubt, use duct tape," could be the new American motto. I've often heard duct tape described as The Force, having both a light side and a dark side, and holding the universe together. And hold it does, as both my date and I had to be cut out of our duct tape outfits. As for the contest, online voting for your favorite duct tape couple takes place between 11 a.m. Eastern Daylight Quenton and Lindsey at the Fremont High prom, covered in duct tape. Time June 16 and 11 a.m. June 25. Go to www.ducktapeclub.com to vote. Quenton Jones, a senior at Fremont High School, enjoys reading and running. Leave a message at qjones88@hotmail.com. |
