Show Trains haven't lost steam People watch the re-enactment of the completion of the transcontinental railroad at the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory Summit on Wednesday. ALAN MURRAY Standard-Examiner INSIDE: Gov. Huntsman chooses spike design for back of state quarter/1 C Re-enactment celebrates 137th anniversary of spike ceremony BY ANDREW WEEKS Standard-Examiner staff aweeks@standard.net PROMONTORY When wealthy banker Edgar Mills called for a moment of silence at the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869, the temperature was a pleasant 69 degrees. Ceremonies held at the Golden Spike National Historic Site on Wednesday, and the 2,500 people who attended the activities, also were greeted with clear skies and warm weather. "This is great," said Richard Felt, director of the re-enactment ceremonies. "In the past, sometimes we've had snow on May 10." About 17 actors, each wearing authentic period clothing, participated in the re-enactment, which depicted the driving of the last spike into the transcontinental railroad. The actors learned their parts separately, because there were no rehearsals for the play, Felt said. Plays are repeated every Saturday and on most holidays throughout the VIDEO: Watch more of the re-enactment Richard Felt holds up the final spike during the re-enactment Wednesday.
