Show Weber County Jail Inmates December 15, 2006 Immigrant suspects housed in Weber jail BY JORDAN MUHLESTEIN Standard-Examiner staff jmuhlestein@standard.net MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detainees from a federal immigration raid at a Hyrum meat-packing plant are being housed in the Weber County Jail. Weber County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jerry Cook said there were 69 total ICE detainees in the 12th Street jail Thursday morning, but he did not know how many were directly involved in the Hyrum raid. The raid was one of six at Swift & Co. plants throughout the country, focused on suspected illegal immigrants and identity theft. There were 145 arrests at the Hyrum plant. Cook said those inmates involved in the raid won't be held in Weber County for long. "The plan is to keep them here for a short time, about 24 to 72 hours," Cook said. "It is up to ICE where they go from here. We're a temporary holding facility." Jailers booked 47 ICE detainees into the jail on Wednesday alone, and most of those inmates listed addresses in Hyrum and Logan, according to booking records. Sheriff Brad Slater said it is not uncommon for ICE agents or U.S. marshals to bring in groups of people for housing. The U.S. Marshals Service brought in 15 prisoners of its own Wednesday. "We've had an agreement with the marshals service and ICE to house inmates for the federal government for several years," Slater said. The county is paid $50-$55 a day per person, he said. Slater said the jail held 190 federal inmates as of Thursday morning, including those from ICE, which is actually less than the average amount. Normally, there are about 225 federal inmates in the jail. There were 386 male Weber County inmates Thursday, he said. Slater said the time a federal inmate stays in the jail varies from case to case, as decided by the federal court system. "We don't get into the cases," he said, adding that some federal inmates stay for a few weeks and some for only a few days. Some are even released, Slater said, depending on their court appearances.
