Show Emergency Training (Cont'd) June 19, 2006 Scenario From 1A While members of his group haven't pushed themselves to the point of going without sleep the way they would in a disaster, Ford said they've worked close to nonstop during daylight hours since they arrived to set up the hospital. "We're trying to make sure we can get this up as quickly as we say we can," he said. "The goal is to land on site and be fully operational within 24 hours." Chief Nurse Lt. Col. Patience Wenck said watching the soldiers work so hard has increased her faith in the ability of the Army to do its job for the people it serves. "When you see soldiers working so hard in the heat of the sun, the wind and in the rainstorm, when you see them working so hard, it makes you feel good." The 44-bed hospital is con-structed largely of synthetic material specially designed to keep germs, molds and mil-dew from growing. The hospital includes two intensive care units, an intermediate care ward, an emergency medical triage unit, a pharmacy, a laboratory and a patient administration area. Two collapsible metal shelters house the X-ray unit and the surgical center. Portable units may be added to give the hospital the capability of serving another 208 patients. The reservists can use equipment it has on hand and can expand to an unlimited capacity with help from other such units. Mobile cabinets and other medical equipment are all pre-organized to allow for quick use wherever the hospital is needed. It's a big change from the mobile Army surgical hospitals highlighted on the popular 70s TV show "M*A*S*H." According to 328th officials, those 30-bed Army units were done away with years ago. |
