BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The Department of Communication grants the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees. Students intending to take either must complete 45 to 60 hours of satisfactory work in Communication according to the specific major requirements. Three majors are offered: A departmental major in Speech, a departmental major in Journalism, and a Speech and Theatre Arts major for prospective secondary education teachers along with Speech Teaching Minor. The department strongly recommends that students take the bachelor of arts rather than the bachelor of science degree. (See requirements for bachelor of arts degree.) Speech Departmental Major—Students majoring in Speech must complete the following courses: Speech 102, 103, 107, 115, 116, 211, 220, 271, 350 or 312, 315, plus an additional twenty hours including an area of major emphasis. Interpretation: Speech 201, 307 plus nine hours from the following: English 453, 454, 466, 382. Public Address: Speech 221, 410, 312, 321, 421. Speech Education: Speech 170, 307, 312, 321 and 485. Radio and Television: Speech 272, 273, 275, 307, 373, 475, 476. Speech Departmental Minor—Students majoring in Speech must complete the following courses: Speech 102, 211, 107, 115, 116, 220, 271, 350. Journalism Departmental Major—Requirements for the major in Journalism include 40 to 45 hours of satisfactory work in Journalism courses, among which must be Journalism 113, 114, 216, 217, 118, 220, 313, 314, 316, 328, 489, and 499. It is recommended that students fulfill the requirements for a minor in one of the social sciences or in English literature. In addition, it is recommended that Journalism majors do work (including some upper division work) in excess of the general education requirements in at least two of the following areas: English literature, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, biology, botany, chemistry, geology, geography, mathematics, or physics. Arts, Letters and Science — Communication Journalism Departmental Minor—The minor in Journalism prepares the student to make a communicative contribution within the field of his major, whether that communication be in the form of letters, reports, or more formal literary efforts. It also provides valuable complementary training for teachers in the language arts fields. Requirements for the Journalism minor are: 20 hours of satisfactory work in Journalism courses, including Journalism 113, 114, 217, 118, 220, and 328. Typewriting—All Journalism students are required to demonstrate typewriting skill. Allied Work—The following courses in allied fields are recommended for Journalism majors and minors: Art 220, 244. 440, 441, 442; Speech 170, 275, 372, 475; Photography 101, 210; Marketing 340; English 225, 321, 328, 325. Speech and Theatre Arts Teaching Major with Speech Emphasis—Students taking the composite teaching major in Speech and Theatre Arts with a Speech emphasis must complete the following courses: Speech 103, 107, 115, 116, 211, 220, 271, 312, 315, 350, and 485; plus an additional twenty-seven hours including an area of major emphasis. Interpretation: Speech 201, 307, plus nine hours from the following: English 453, 454, 466, 382. Public Address: Speech 221, 410, 321, 421. Radio and Television: Speech 272, 273, 275, 373, 475, 476. No minor is required of the composite teaching major in Speech and Theatre Arts. See Theatre Arts Department section for theatre requirements. Students are required to participate in at least two major projects a year; this participation must be in at least two aspects of forensic experience, a radio and television experience, or theatre experience, or any combination thereof. Speech and Theatre Arts Teaching Major with Theatre Arts Emphasis—Students taking the composite teaching major in Speech and Theatre Arts with a Theatre Arts emphasis must complete the following courses in Speech: Speech 107, 115, 211, 220, 230, 271,275, 312, 350. Speech 485 is recommended. No minor is required of the composite teaching major in Speech and Theatre Arts. Students are required to participate in at least three major productions each year; this participation must be in at least two aspects of theatre experience.
