Show Business and Economics — Office Administration DEPARTMENT OF OFFICE ADMINISTRATION AND BUSINESS EDUCATION Associate Professor, Bill S. Henrie, Assistant Professors, Olga B. Brown, Elaine A. Jarrett; Instructor, Margaret O. Bennett. The Office Administration curriculum is organized to assist students in becoming administrative assistants, office managers, secretaries or clerks. The four-year Bachelor of Science program trains for the "executive secretary," administrative assistant, office manager, and preparation for becoming a Certified Professional Secretary. For students not interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree but desiring specific training, there are available the following programs: two-year Associate of Science, or Certificate of Completion, and the one- to six-quarter specialized program emphasizing any specific areas of business. The Business Education curriculum is organized for the training of teachers in the general field of business with a specialization in either secretarial training or accounting. Departmental Major in Office Administration—In addition to the general education requirements of the College and the core requirements of the School of Business and Economics, the student must complete Office Administration 103, 123, 150, 301, 341, 351, 352, 355 and 499. Majors are exempt from Economics 251 in the core requirements and may substitute Mathematics 102 for Mathematics 105, Management 101 for Management 364 and Finance 101 for Economics 250. Departmental Minor in Office Administration—A baccalaureate degree candidate may satisfy this minor by completing Office Administration 103, 123, 301 and 351, plus 8 additional hours selected from the following: Office Administration 150, 341, 325; Accounting 201 and 202; Economics 101 etc. (See minor advisor for substitute courses.) Business Education—Accounting and Office Administration are acceptable areas of concentration in the Composite Teaching Major and Economics is an acceptable Business Teaching Minor. Composite Major in Business Education—This teaching major is recommended for prospective secondary school and junior college business educators and consists of a minimum of 82 quarter 238 Business and Economics — Office Administration hours in the areas listed below. The area of major emphasis can be either accounting or secretarial. A 2.25 GPA is required. In addition to the general education requirements of the College and the core requirements of the School of Business and Economics, the student must complete 33 hours of education courses and Office Administration 103, 123, 150, 301, 341, 351, 352, 355, 361, either 362 or 363, and 499. Those emphasizing Accounting should substitute Accounting 311, 312, and 313 for Office Administration 123 and 341. Mathematics 102 may be substituted for Mathematics 105, Management 101 for Management 364, and all majors are exempt from the following core requirement: Economics 250, 251, 301, or 302, Finance 320 and Management 478. Teaching Minor in Business Education—A teaching minor in Business Education is available in the area of Typewriting with Accounting, Business Machines, or Shorthand as the other area of emphasis with not less than 24 credit hours. See minor advisor for exact course listings. Courses of Instruction 101. Elementary Typewriting—Development of sustained typing power, control of figures and symbols, improvement of techniques. A speed of at least 30 words per minute should be attained. May be waived by proficiency examination. Credit will not be given to students who have had six months of typing previously. (Formerly Personal Elementary Typewriting.) A W S (3) 102. Intermediate Typewriting—Continuation of Office Administration 101. Review of keyboard, business letters, tabulated reports, improvement of basic skills, and intensive speed building. For those typing 25 words per minute or faster. Prerequisite: Office Administration 101 or equivalent. (Formerly Elementary Typewriting Continued.) A W S (3) 103. Advanced Typewriting—Manuscripts, special problems in letter arrangement and business forms. Prerequisite: Office Administration 102 or at least 40 words per minute. (Formerly Intermediate Typewriting.) A W S (3) 111. Machine Shorthand—Introduction to Touch Shorthand keyboard, theory, and speed development with dictation speeds to 60 words per minute or faster.
