Show Education — Family Life Education — Family Life candidate for student teacher also must have completed at least 25 credit hours in his teaching major and 15 credit hours in his teaching minor, or 40 hours in the composite major. Family Life is Everyone's Future: The Department of Family Life offers two majors: Child Development and Family Life; and three minors leading toward a baccalaureate degree and also an associate degree. The department provides a broad experience for men and women which contributes to: a liberal education, individual development, preparation for fulfillment in marriage and family living, graduate study, professional and para-professional careers in home economics and other family life and child development specialties in education, special family services, government, and business. Departmental requirements have been formulated to be flexible to meet student's individual needs. Some specific career areas a student majoring in Family Life can prepare for are: * Pre-school teaching in a variety of settings " Rendering a variety of special services to marriages and families as well as individuals in all stages of the life span from childhood through old age. " Professional home economists to work in many areas such as: extension services as well as other state and government agencies, utility companies, and other business and industry settings. While acquiring a degree in Family Life a student can develop proficiencies in special interests such as: * Environmental Designing * Housing and Management Specialties * Fashion Merchandising * Clothing and Textile Specialties ° Food Services A student can also coordinate a degree in Family Life or Child Development with concentrations in other professional areas such as: 0 Nursing * Office Administration and Business * Teaching Certification * Journalism or Radio and TV * Social Work A student must have an average of at least 2.25 in Family Life courses in order to qualify for graduation with a major or minor in the Family Life Department. Child Development Major—A student's program must be arranged in consultation with an advisor. A minimum of 40 hours of Family Life courses are required including each of the following: Family Life 101, 150, 251, 252, 351, 352, 353, 450, 451, 470, 499A. A student must also complete an additional 25 hours from the following list of courses: Anthropology 101, 102, 310, 330; Art 115, 117; English 330, American Literature and English Literature—three hours each; Education 301, 325, and 446; Zoology 230; Psychology 154, 312, 314, 343, 400; Sociology 130, 250, 315, 321, 332 and 410; and Speech 102. Related courses may be substituted upon approval and professional preparation in such areas as Elementary Teaching Certification, Nursing, Social Work, etc., may be counted in lieu of this 25 hour requirement. A student cannot count courses toward both a minor and this 25 hour requirement. Child Development Laboratory—A Nursery School which serves as a child development laboratory is maintained to give students practical experience. Arrangements for students to teach in the Nursery School must be made with the supervisor of the Nursery School before completion of the sophomore year. Family Life Major—Since there are many areas of emphasis a student can pursue with a Family Life Major, a student must meet with his advisor and make a written agreement between the student and the department pertaining to his area of emphasis. Courses required of all students: Family Life 101, 115, 132, 140, 150, 340. An additional 20 to 40 hours in Family Life courses is also required as well as at least 20 hours of related courses selected from other departments on the campus. 264 265 |
