Show July 2006 Lots of activities and fun were available for residents during this summer month. It was extremely hot for much of the month, with several days reaching 100 in some areas along the Wasatch Front. It seems just a short time ago that we were complaining about the cold, or worrying that the fruit blossoms would freeze. Our annual July Fourth celebration was another great success. Some 80 golfers played in the Eighth Annual Golf Competition held on July 3 at Mulligan's Golf Course. Little Miss Firecracker was Kylee Fuller, chosen queen, with Addison Jones, Lindsey Hodson and Kelsie Maughan as princesses. The contest was also held on July 3, under the direction of Lori Jones. After breakfasts and flag raising in both the Marriott and Slaterville parks on July 4, a successful parade made its way from 700 South along 1200 West to the Marriott Park. We are amazed at the creative ability of many of our residents, as witnessed in floats, and decorated bicycles, tricycles and wagons. The Phipps, Will Holley, and Paul Himle families, and the Little Miss Firecracker floats were among those who received a trophy for their entries. It was fun for both participants and spectators. Hamburgers and hot dogs, prepared by council members, were sold, so good food was available for purchase by those in attendance. The auction for the senior center brought in funds in the amount of $600.00. Who is the champion pie eater in the community? It must be Alden Farr who won the contest again this year and issued a challenge to all contenders to get prepared for next year. Young people enjoyed the giant slide and the candy cannon. Plinko, spin-the-wheel, soccer kick, and hit the super heroes, were booth games which filled the afternoon with fun for many. A baby contest held in the afternoon saw Alexis Maughan selected as Princess, Chance Sjostrom, King, and Kyson Meyerhoffer as Prince. Thanks to Pam Slater and all her helpers for a great celebration again this year. Residents who did not come to the Evening of Music at the Park on July 17, 2006, at the Marriott Park, missed a real treat. We had great local talent from Robert Hirschi (music) and Michael Murphy (poetry). The out-of-the-community stars of the evening were the Dahl sisters, Jolene Dahl, Shirley Guy, Susan Kelley and Sharon Roe. They presented a hilarious evening of songs, accompanied by various string instruments, humor and delightful antics. (How about the nurse's string instrument?) It was a wonderful evening! Heat and summer fun or not, government business must go on. On July 18, 2005, two public hearings on changes on zoning requests by Justin Tobias and Maverik, Inc., were held during the Planning Commission meeting. No public comments were received. After discussion, both requests were approved unanimously and sent to the City Council. The site plan for a regional storm water detention basin and park at 700 South and the Willard Canal was presented. A committee made up largely of residents living near the park had made their recommendations. Commissioner Kent Meyerhoffer asked how the park would be maintained and City Administrator Bill Morris stated that the homes in the special service district, which includes the Quail Meadows subdivision, would pay a monthly fee for park maintenance. Hours of operation and parking space were discussed. Site approval was approved unanimously. Commission Chair Les Syme commented: "We have a growing community, and we need places for children to play. This is a good use of this property." |
