Show OBITUARY Once again, the chilly hand of death has permeated our midst and deprived us of the presence of our beloved one. MYRTLE THERESA WALKER was the third child, and first daughter, born to Rev. John David and Theresa Louise Vaughn on January 12, 1921, in Kinder, Louisiana. The family relocated to Lake Charles, Louisiana. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized into the fellowship of Starlight Baptist Church where her uncle, Rev. Saul S. Captain, was pastor. Later, she joined and worked diligently at Christian Baptist Church, under the guidance of Rev. W. C. Clark. She attended First Ward Elementary School and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in 1939. In 1940, she completed courses at Hughes Business School in Houston, Texas and started teaching business classes in a setting of her own in Lake Charles, in 1941. Her effort was successful and continued until she married Mr. Jesse Ruffin and moved to San Diego, California in 1942. Two sons, Jesse and Arnold, were from that union. She came to Los Angeles in 1945 and began working in Southern Missionary Baptist Church, founded by her father, Rev. John D. Vaughn, and later pastored by her brother, Rev. J. E. Vaughn. For many years, Mrs. Walker provided leadership in virtually every department of Southern Baptist—Sunday School Teacher, Choir Director, BTU Teacher, Director of Back to School and Black History Programs, and her annual Poetry Recitals. Recently, she took those talents to New Harvest Christian Fellowship on Bandera Avenue, pastored by Rev. Wilbert Davis. She married Mr. John Walker in 1949. To that union, four chil- dren were born. Mrs. Walker began working for the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1960 and retired from Soto Children’s Center, as food preparer, in June of 1990. She passed away on May 6, 1991 at Kaiser Hospital in Bellflower, California. She leaves to cherish beautiful memories of a Christian life: her devoted children, Terry, Michael, David Earl and Theresa Walker, and Arnold Ruffin; nine grandchildren, Darrvl, Shawn, and Monique Ruffin, Maisha and David Walker, Shantee, Tara, Donna, and Arnold Ruffin; two daughters-in-law, Deborah Ruffin and Gwendolvn Walker; two sisters, Maude Hudgins and Naomi McGee; one brother, Her- bert Vaughn; one sister-in-law, Faustine Vaughn; three nieces, Saundra Gray, Connie Taylor, and Shirlev Dent: two nenhews, Ronald Dent and Sharod Vaughn; two grand nieces, Tasha Gray and Janelle Dent; three grand nephews, Tyrell and Stephon Taylor, Vaughn Dent; (continued) |
