Show Annie L. Mathews OGDEN- Annie L. Mathews, age 89, passed away peacefully Saturday July 6, 1996 at Manor Care Nursing Center after a long illness. She was born March 15, 1908 in Houston, Texas, 3 a daughter of Maggie Josey and son. Joe She Wat- was reared in Houston, Texas and graduated from Washington High School § § ~with honors, and &F attended Wylie College in Marshall, Texas. | . In | December § § of 1928 she & i married Vernon E. Smith, they were lat er divorced. She married Oliver Ma-. _thews in 1964 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death in 1973. Annie moved to Ogden: in 1978 with her daughter and son- -in-law Donald» Cope: _ Annie had been a member of Luther Mae E. Adams BPOElks #1343 and had been a member of the Eastern Star of Los Angeles, California before moving to Utah. Annie was a very kind, loving and gentie person and would go out of her way to do things for others. She loved to converse with others and had a wonderful sense of humor. Sorte She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1955. She was _ the first black telephone operator in _ Houston, Texas. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
