Show Obituary Wendell Phillip Shelton was the fourth child born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, tothe late Attorney N.W. Shelton and Mamie Chiles-Shelton on July 12, 1910. He departed this life on Monday July 15, 1991 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. At an early age Wendell joined the Eighth Avenue Baptist Church where he remained a member until he moved to San Bernardino, California in 1954. Upon arriving in California he united with the Bethesda Baptist Church where he became an ordained Deacon and Church Treasurer. Upon returning to Pine Bluff in 1987 he reunited with the Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member until his death. Wendell attended public school in Pine Bluff before enrolling inthe Laboratory School at Branch Normal (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). During World War Two he served in the U.S. Army as a Private before being honorably discharged. On September 23, 1934 Bro. Shelton was married to Miss Daisy Wills in Pine Bluff. There were no children born to this union but afoster son, Jimmy Shelton, was reared in their home. Before leaving Pine Bluff in 1954, he owned and operated a cleaning business, clothing store and restaurant in downtown Pine Bluff. Shortly after arriving in San Bernardino he opened Shelton's Trails End which was rated as the top of the line barbecue restaurant in the San Bernardino Valley area. He operated this business for 15 years before retiring and returning to Pine Bluff in 1987 to live out his retirement. Bro. Shelton leaves to cherish his memory; a devoted wife, Daisy (for 54 years); one foster son, James Shelton of Ogden, Utah; four grandchildren, Alden, D.K., James and Christopher Shelton all of Ogden, Utah; one brother, Eugene Shelton of New York City, New York; two sisters, Marion Shelton Hurd, Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Ella Shelton Cockerham of New York City, New York; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. |
