Arts, Letters and Science — Academic Advisement Students may take teaching majors in all of the fields listed above except in Applied Physics, Commercial Art, Journalism, Microbiology, Music, Speech, and Theatre Arts. They may also take a teaching major in Earth Science and composite teaching majors in Biology, Mathematics and Physical Science, Music, Social Science, and Speech and Theatre Arts. Students may take departmental minors and/or teaching minors in all of the departmental majors listed above except Applied Physics and Commercial Art. They may also take departmental minors in Anthropology, Military Science, Philosophy, and Photography. The School of Arts, Letters and Science works closely with the School of Education in preparing students for teaching majors and minors and composite teaching majors. Students should consult the catalog in departmental sections of the School of Arts, Letters and Science and in the School of Education for specific listings and descriptions of majors and minors. A number of programs which prepare students for the professions are provided within the School of Arts, Letters and Science. These programs include pre-agriculture, pre-dental, pre- engineering, pre-forestry, pre-law, pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-range management, and pre-veterinary medicine. Opportunity is also given students to receive associate titles at the conclusion of two years of study provided the general education requirements and the appropriate specific requirements are met. Thus, the School of Arts, Letters and Science, with its broad offering and its numerous and varied programs, is able to meet the needs of students with greatly differing interests. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT The administration of academic advisement is placed under the Dean of the School of Arts, Letters and Science. The Assistant Dean for General Education serves as coordinator of advisement. Advisement functions are carried out by the Director of Admission, the Assistant Dean for General Education, the Coordinator of Guided Studies, and the Director of Counseling. Meeting the advisement needs of all students is accomplished through cooperative action involving coordination through the Advisement Office, advisement by faculty within departments, guidance for special students through Guided Studies, and pro- Arts, Letters and Science — Academic Advisement fessional counseling assistance provided by the Counseling Center. An adviser is appointed for each student in each area to assist him with his registration schedule and to guide him toward a degree of his choice or toward a certificate program. CULTURAL PROGRAM The Fine Arts Center annually presents a liberal cultural program. Through this program ennobling thoughts and great ideas are expressed and communicated by means of the media of sight and sound. The various publics of the campus and community may receive culture through the fine and performing arts. These arts enrich the campus-community publics. The cultural calendar includes diversified activities, events and programs relating to the presentation, performance, execution and exhibition of major art forms and productions which have substantial artistic and cultural significance. Through these numerous offerings, the Center has brought to the campus-community many internationally, and nationally, known celebrities in the areas of the humanities, arts, sciences, and public affairs. These cultural bookings are in addition to the College's own numerous and excellent musical and theatrical productions and art exhibits. It is in this spirit and in these modes of cultural contagions the Center serves as a well-established college-community-cul- tural-acadamic-artistic-dynamic enterprise. GUIDED STUDIES Based on the evidence of low high school grades and/or performance on college entrance examinations, a number of applicants for admission to Weber State College are not sufficiently well prepared to perform adequately the academic work required. Some of these applicants are, however, admitted under special provisions. (See ADMISSIONS—High School Grade Point and American College Test.) The Guided Studies Program at Weber State College is designed to assist these students who are admitted with minimal qualifications and prediction of academic success. It endeavors to initiate them into the college environment and to provide them with motivation, encouragement, and study skills that are essential for academic success. This is accomplished through special counseling, academic advisement and special courses of instruction. 82 83
