Teaching Reading—An overview of the developmental reading program in the elementary school with consideration given to historical development, lesson planning, and methods and materials for instruction. This course should be taken before student teaching and is a prerequisite for Education 339 or 340. (3) 322. Science in the Elementary School—(3) 323. Social Studies in the Elementary School—(3) 324. Basic Skills for Elementary Teachers—The introductory WILKITs in several of the teaching areas including language arts, art, music, audio-visual skills, tutoring, and educational psychology. A W S (4) 325. Elementary School Curriculum I—Teaching reading and language arts in the elementary school. This block contains the basic program for teaching reading. A W S (6) 326. Elementary School Curriculum II—Emphasizes the methods of teaching mathematics, science, and social studies. A W S (6) 334. Elementary School Curriculum—Fundamentals of curriculum, with special consideration given to art, music, language arts, physical education. Combines lecture and laboratory experiences. A W S (5) 335. Elementary School Curriculum—A continuation of curriculum fundamentals, with special consideration given to modern mathematics, science, and social studies. Combines lecture and laboratory experiences. Prerequisite: Math 108 and 109. A W S (4) 339. Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades—Analysis of developmental reading skills, with emphasis on readiness for reading, phonic and structural analysis, word recognition, use of the basal reader, and reading for various purposes. Prerequisite: Education 321 or equivalent. (3) 340. Teaching Reading in the Intermediate Grades—Analysis of developmental and functional reading skills, with emphasis on structural analysis, use of the basal reader, meaning difficulties, reading study skills, reading for various purposes, and developing versatility. Prerequisites: Education 321 or equivalent. (3) 342. Kindergarten and Primary Education—The learning characteristics and learning needs of young children and how these are provided for in the program of the kindergarten and first grade. (3) 343. Creative Processes in the Elementary School—Development of attitudes, methods and skills in creative teaching. Prerequisite: Education 437, 438 or teaching experience. (3) 346. The Secondary School Student—Study of the adolescent with emphasis upon understanding his health, processes of adjustment, development of interests, attitudes and values as they relate to teacher responsibilities in the classroom. A W S (3) 350. Theoretical Foundations of Secondary Education- Examines the elements of human behavior and learning as they are related to teaching. WILKITs include Growth and Development, and Needs and Characteristics of Adolescence. Registration for bi-weekly seminar required each quarter. Prerequisite: Education 300. A W S (4) 352. Methods of Teaching in Secondary Schools—Instruction and experience in organizing and directing classroom learning activities. Includes lecture and laboratory experiences in the form of assignment for two hours per week in a local secondary school and/or participation in the microteaching clinic. A W S (3) 355. Instructional Skills for Secondary Teachers—Concerned with the development of those basic technical and methodological skills necessary for success in teaching secondary school children. WILKITs include The Four C's of Teaching, Lesson and Unit Planning, Classroom Strategies, Instructional Media, and Techniques lor Evaluating Student Performance. Registration for bi-weekly seminar required each quarter. Prerequisite: Education 350. A W S Su (6) 360. Instructional Skills for Elementary Teachers—Developing the professional skills necessary to teach children at the elementary level.
