Show Arts, Letters and Science — English to acquaint the secondary school Journalism teacher with the problems involved in organizing a staff, gathering material and publishing a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine. American College Texts—Before registering for Freshman English, all new students except those presenting acceptable college credit in Freshman English must take the American College Tests. (ACT) Freshman Composition—According to their performance in high school and on the ACT, students may be excused entirely from freshman composition; they may be placed in the advanced sequence of English 111, 112, and 113; they may be placed in the regular sequence of English 101, 102, and 103; or they may be placed in English 100 to review English fundamentals before entering the regular sequence of English 101, 102, and 103. A grade of "C" or better is necessary in English 100 before students placed there may proceed to English 101. When entered upon English 101, 102, and 103 or English 111, 112, and 113, Arts, Letters and Science — English students are required to take classes in sequential order, preferably during their freshman year. BACCALAUREATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS English Major—The Department of English requires its majors to take the bachelor of arts degree. Besides completing foreign language requirements for this degree, majors must complete from 45-60 hours of satisfactory work in English language and literature with a minimum of 30 hours in upper division. Two types of majors are offered: a teaching major for prospective secondary education teachers and a departmental English major. Majors of both types are urged to fulfill their foreign language requirements as lower division students. English Departmental Major—The following courses are required of an English major: English 368 or 369, 371, 381 or 383, 499; any one of the following three courses: English 321, 325, 328; two of the following four courses: 451, 452, 453, 454; three of the following six courses: 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. The following courses are strongly recommended by the Department: English 374, 367, 382, 475; History 450 or 451. English Teaching Major—An English teaching major must complete all requirements for an English departmental major and must also take English 223 or 324 before taking student teaching. English Departmental Minor—An English departmental minor must complete at least twenty hours of approved work in English. The following courses are required of an English departmental minor: at least one of the following three courses: English 232, 233, 234, during the freshman or sophomore years; one of the three courses: English 321, 325, 328; one of the following four courses: English 451, 452, 453, 454; one of the following six courses: English 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466. The following courses are recommended: English 367, 368, or 369, 371, 374, 382, 383, 475. English Teaching Minor—An English teaching minor must complete at least 28 hours of approved work in English. He must take all courses required for an English departmental minor and must take English 223 or 324 before taking student teaching. Courses Acceptable for English Credit—The following courses only are acceptable as English credit toward graduation for majors and minors: English 223, 225, 232, 233, 234, 235, 240, 321, 324, 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 330, 331, 343, 350, 358, 360, 110 111 |
