The following services are provided through the Weber State College Counseling Center: (1) counseling with vocational, educational, and personal problems; (2) testing; (3) occupational information. Counseling—The objective of the Counseling Center is to assist students in making intelligent decisions regarding their vocational, academic, and personal needs on a short-term basis (about one quarter). The Weber State College Counseling Center does not provide long-term intensive psychotherapy. All counselors in the Counseling Center are professionally trained in educational and counseling psychology which enables them to deal with a wide range of vocational, educational, and personal problems. Any student who desires assistance may visit with a counselor prior to his first registration to help him in the choice of a major and in making other educational plans. Appointments may be made through the main office of the Counseling Center. Psychiatric Service—Psychiatric assistance is available to WSC students on a limited basis through the Counseling Center. The present service consists primarily of diagnosis and short-term therapy. Appointments and referrals to the psychiatrist may be made through the Counseling Center. Testing—Each Freshman is required to take the American College Test prior to registration. The ACT measures the areas of English, mathematics, natural science, and social studies, and is used for placement in beginning courses. In addition, aptitude, interest, personality, and achievement tests are available for the purpose of helping students select their major and deal with other personal concerns relevant to college adjustment. An adult student who has not graduated from high school is required to take the General Educational Development Tests of the United States Armed Forces Institute prior to admission. These tests are available at the Weber State College Counseling and Testing Center. Occupational Information—Occupational information is provided through counselors, through the library, and through the Placement Service. FINANCIAL AIDS William D. VanDyke, Director . Anderson, Coordinator of Student Loans The Financial Aids Program, consisting of work-study, part- time employment, grants, loans and institutional aids, is established to help the student who, through necessity, is partly self- sustaining. The belief that educational opportunities should be open to all promising young men and women, regardless of financial background, has been the motive behind the generosity and interest of those who make the Weber State College Financial Aids Program possible. Scholarships—In accordance with state law, Weber State College grants tuition scholarships to students. Community, business, professional, and fraternal organizations as well as the federal government grant scholarships to deserving Weber State College students. Sponsor Scholarships—Weber State College patron, alumni, school organization, and community group scholarships are open to qualified students. Stipends are for either partial or full educational expenses as determined by the individual scholarship grant.
