Show Utah Skills Center North COURSES OF INSTRUCTION ESL012. Vocational Mathematics—General mathematics course applying math to everyday situations and vocational areas. Instruction in foreign language and English with an emphasis on English. (1-9) ESL014. Development of Speech Patterns—Designed to teach basic conversational skills in English. Emphasis on developing speaking and listening with some stress on pronunciation and grammar. (1-9) ESL016. Essentials in Communication—Expansion in speaking and listening skills to become fluent in the English language. (1-9) ESL018. Core Vocabulary—Designed to teach the student to comprehend and to use Dolch's 220 basic vocabulary words. Dictionary skills are introduced. (1-9) ESL020. Vocabulary Building—Basic techniques in enlarging and improving the student's vocabulary. Drills are oriented toward the individual's vocational choice. (1-9) ESL022. Introductory Reading—Designed to teach basic reading skills beginning with alphabetical sounds and advancing through simple reading selection. (1-9) ESL024. Vocational Reading—Organized to increase reading skills. Oriented toward the individual's vocation. Comprehension is stressed. (1-9) ESL026. Fundamental Writing—Concentration on developing writing skills from the alphabet to simple sentences. (1-9) ESL028. Techniques in Composition—Development of basic writing skills with stress on grammar and spelling. (1-9) ESL030. Supportive Vocational Studies—Expansion of reading, writing, speaking, listening skills in conjunction with the individual's vocational training. (1-9) AREA OF PRE-VOCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL EDUCATION Toby Gonzales, Supervisor The pre-vocational/vocational area provides individuals with a variety of experiences in exploring and selecting a vocational training program. Utah Skills Center North Individuals entering the program are evaluated and counseled to determine their areas of vocational interest. They are then provided exploratory experiences in a variety of areas, such as building trades, machine tool, drafting, welding, sheet-metal and also sales and retailing so that they can select areas which they would like to enter for entry-level training or advanced training. The objective of the pre-vocational/vocational program is to provide individuals with entry-level skills for on-the-job training or directly entering the job market. These entry-level skills may be classified according to job title as follows: carpenter helper, plumber helper, mason helper, draftsman junior, machine tool helper, welder, sewing machine operator, drapery maker, automotive mechanic helper, upholsterer, carpet layer, electronic assembler and sheet-metal worker. Students may also use their training in conjunction with Adult Basic Education as prerequisite skill preparation for entering vocational education which provides training in the following areas: aircraft instrument repair, auto body, automotive technology, automotive services, diesel service, diesel technology, machine tool, welding, manufacturing technology, data processing, distributive education, sales and retailing, supermarket training, meat cutting, fashion merchandising, interior design, food service and engineering graphics. Exploratory Vocational Orientation Since students entering the Skills Center are not always certain about their vocational goals they are provided assistance in selecting occupational training. The initial step in this direction is for the students to enroll in Exploratory Vocational Orientation, whereupon they are able to explore the different kinds of skills needed for vocational training. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION PV001. Exploratory Vocational Orientation—This is a short term orientation intended to expose students to all basic tasks involved in different kinds of occupations. The objective here is to make students aware of potential jobs, required skills for these jobs, and training available at the Skills Center. It will also help students (and their counselors) to realize their interests and abilities so that they can choose occupations and be 420 421 |
