Show Education — Secondary Education Education — Secondary Education DEPARTMENT OF SECONDARY EDUCATION Harley K. Adamson, Chairman The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional courses and academic specialization. The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's academic (teaching) major. Also, he should receive help as needed from a staff member in his academic (teaching) minor. He will also be assigned an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting the requirements of the School of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. It is required that the student complete the 33 credit hours required for certification in the following sequence: Education 300, 350, 355, 495, 499. The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 42 and 20 quarter hours respectively. The teaching major and minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement—see below). COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS Art Botany—if taken with Zoology Chemistry English French Geography German History Mathematics Music Physical Education Physics Political Science 'Psychology Sociology Spanish Zoology—if taken with Botany MINORS ONLY * Instructional Media Reading Economics Speech Health Education Theatre Arts * Photography These major and minor requirements are described in the catalog under the departments offering them. COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty- two hours of subjects in closely related fields. The composite major does not require an accompanying minor. The following are composite majors with their requirements: Life Science Composite Teaching Major The Life Science Composite Teaching Major must complete a minimum of 62 quarter hours in the life sciences in addition to the requirements in the physical sciences, state certification and graduation requirements. The required courses have been selected to give the student a broad background in the biological disciplines as well as minimal training in the physical sciences. The courses required for the Life Science Composite Teaching Major are: Botany 110, 112, 361 or 362; Microbiology 111; Zoology 201, 211, 212, 330, 381; Botany 345 or Zoology 440 or 445; Botany 320 or Zoology 420 or 421; two credits of seminar selected from the Botany, Microbiology or Zoologv Departments; Chemistry 111, 112, 113, or 121, 122, 123; Geology 111 and 112 or 122; Physics 101 and Mathematics 105 or 106. Substitutions of equivalent credits or deviations from the above requirements must be approved by the advisor. Recommended electives may be selected from the following: Botany 310, 322, 350, 415; Zoology 372, 380, 464, 468. It is strongly recommended that the students take more advanced courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, especially if they plan on graduate studies beyond the bachelor of science degree.
