Reading Teaching Minor The Secondary Education Department offers a minor in the teaching of reading as an academic subject. This preparation covers the instructional methods, materials selection, diagnostic procedures, and instructional content for teaching reading both at the remedial and the developmental levels to secondary students. This minor was developed in response to the growing demand for reading instruction beyond the elementary school. The following courses are required for this teaching minor: Communications 211 or English 383, Education 321, 459, 460, 465, 466, and 486, plus at least two courses from the following: English 104 or 107, English 330 or 331, Communications 107 or 201, and Education 468. The student can earn the Learning Disabilities endorsement from the State Board of Education, which enables him to be employed in this field from kindergarten through twelfth grade, by completing six additional hours: Education 467 and Education 486 (repeated). STUDENT TEACHING Student Teaching (Education 495) is taken in selected junior and senior high school classrooms. The student may elect to have experience at both levels and in both his major and minor subjects. During the quarter the student's time is taken entirely with student teaching and related professional course work. Assignments are made with consideration to the qualifications of the personnel in the cooperating schools as well as the needs of the student teacher. All arrangements are made in the Office of the Coordinator of Professional Laboratory Experiences. Students who have completed the prerequisites: Education 195, 300, 350, 355 may take student teaching the spring quarter of the junior year or the fall, winter, or spring quarter of the senior year. It must be completed prior to his final quarter on campus. The candidate for student teacher also must have completed at least 25 credit hours in his teaching major and 15 credit hours in his teaching minor, or 40 hours in the composite major. The Family Life Department offers a broad education for men and women which contributes to preparation for: Pre-School teaching Special services to marriages, families, and individuals from infancy through old age Professional home economics associated with the Extension Service, state and government agencies, utility companies, and business Family Life majors may develop proficiency in: Environmental Design Housing and Management Clothing and Textiles Foods and Nutrition Candidates for a baccalaureate degree must complete 183 credit hours. Students majoring or minoring in Family Life must maintain a grade average of 2.25 in their professional courses. Child Development Major—A student's program must be arranged in consultation and written agreement with an adviser. A minimum of 40 hours of Family Life courses are required including each of the following: Family Life 101, 150, 251, 252, 352, 353, 450, 451, 470, and 499A. A student must have two minors, or one minor plus twenty-five additional credits approved by the department. Suggested minors are: Family Relations or Family Life, Sociology or Psychology, Elementary Education, Nursing, Business, Recreation, Instructional Media, or Journalism. A student cannot count courses toward both a minor and the 25 hour credit requirement. Family Life Major—A major in Family Life provides the student with an opportunity to pursue several areas of emphasis.
