Deep Freeze woman Moves Fingers and Toes CHICAGO, Feb. 10 (U.P.) Chicagos deep freeze woman made medical history today by wiggling her fingers and toes. That simple act raised the hopes of doctors, already amazed by her remarkable improvement, that they might be able to save her arms and legs. Doctors at Michael Reese Hospital said that for the first time they dare to hope that Mrs. Dorothy Mae Stevens, 23, will recover. When she was found in an alley Thursday morning, frozen into a condition similar to rigor mortis, her temperature was 64 degs., lowest in medical annals. Today, her temperature had risen to 100.8, slightly above normal. Her pulse was 100, respiration 24 and blood pressure 132 80, all just about within the normal range, doctors said. Put on Soft Diet Since regaining consciousness she has been fed broth and other liquids, but today specialists put her on a soft but highcaloric diet. Dr. Harold Laufman of North western University, who has been in charge of the case, was encouraged when Mrs. Stevens moved her fingers and toes. It appears that theres hope for saving her limbs, he said. Shell lose a lot of skin, but that can be replaced by grafting. The woman was found lying frozen at 8 15 a.m. Thursday, in 9belowzero weather. Two policemen thought she was dead but took her to the hospital to make sure. Doctors made an opening in her throat to aid breathing, and administered massive doses of cortisone, the new wonder drug which had been found effective in cases of severe burn. How much of her dramatic recovery could be attributed to cortisone doctors could not say. They said they used it in her case in the belief it counteracts shock. Mrs. Stevens first words on regaining consciousness were Im cold. Today she complained of a slight fever.
