STANDING ROOM ONLY Salt Lake Tribune Feby 27 51 14,000 Korean Refugees Jam Aboard Transport New York Times Service New York, Feb. 26 Details of one of the most fantastic of all overseas movements of human beings were disclosed here Monday by officials of the MooreMacCormack Lines and the Military Sea Transportation Service. The incident involved the evacuation of 14,000 Korean refugees from Hungnam on a single cargo ship and the vessels threeday voyage to a South Korean island. So unbelievable is the episode that, though it occurred last Dec. 2225, steamship company officials and the transportation service refused to admit its veracity for many weeks, pending an investigation. Finally convinced that the story was authentic, Rear Adm. William M. Callaghan, director of the service mentioned it briefly in a report issued in Washington. Mentioned in Report The ship was the Meredith Victory, operated by MooreMacCormack and under charter to the service. Commanded by 37yearold Capt. Leonard P. LaRue of Philadelphia. The vessel arrived in Hungnam on Dec. 21 to evacuate civilians. Despite the fact that the ship ha snormal accommodations for only 12 passengers, the skippered offered to take aboard as many civilians as he could fit in the hull and superstructure. The mad scramble that followed, according to officials here, accounted for the 14,000 passengers. As far as is known, this was the largest number ever carried on a single voyage of a commercial ship with the exception of the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. Virtually all of the refugees were forced to stand throughout the threeday voyage, unable to move more than a foot or two in any direction. None asked where he or she was being taken, and it was impossible to serve food during the trip. We had barely left Hungnam whe ncalls came to help mothers deliver babies, said one of the ships crew. There were five cases the first day out. There I stood, with infant sail around and something to do every minute. Before these people disembarked I had lost count of the number of births.
