S. apostle, was formerly a practicing lawyer and a carpenters helper.Sustained by the unanimous vote of thousands of the faithful at second day sessions of the 122nd semiannual conference of the church in the mammoth Salt Lake tabernacle, Apostle Romney was advanced from his position as senior assistant to the apostles. Named AssistantApostle Romney who was appointed an assistant to the apostles at the April conference in 1941, is the only member of that group to be advanced to the apos tleship.It is not the pattern, it was pointed out.The new member of the quorum of the twelve apostles was named to fill a vacancy resulting from the elevation of Apostle Stephen L Richards to the first presidency at the April conference of this year.Apostle Richards, second senior member of the council of the twelve was appointed first counselor in the first presidency when David O. McKay succeeded President George Albert Smith.Apostle Romney who has held the important office as managing director of the church welfare program since 1941 was president of the Bonneville stake when he was appointed an assistant to the apostles during President Heber J. Grants administration.Presided Over StakeHe presided over the Bonneville stake for three years from 1938 to 1941. He was bishop of the Thirty third ward of Bonneville stake from 1935 to 1938.A practicing lawyer for 10 years, Apostle Romney closed his law office in 1941 to devote the major portion of his time to his important church duties as assistant to the apostles and manager of the welfare program.He was born in Colnia, Mexico, on Sept. 19, 1897 a son of George S. Romney and Artemesia Redd Romney. He moved with his parents in 1912 to El Paso, Texas and to Los Angeles in 1917. He worked with his father as a carpenters helper in Los Angeles and also when the family moved to Salt Lake City.In March 1924 Apostle Romney married Ida J. Jensen. They have two sons, Richard J. Romney, 23. and George J. Romney, 17, and one grandchild.
