FRIDAY EVENING, MARCH 30, 1951 Hoover Commission Progress George Gadsbys hopes, as expressed to the Ogden Rotary club, for speedy enactment of all of the Hoover commission government reforms, should rise as the Utah Power & Light company president reads Fortune magazine this month. The periodical reports that only two years after the commission reported its proposals for improving government efficiency about half of the reforms are law, and eventual savings are estimated at two. billion dollars a year. This is remarkable progress, the magazine says, taking into account that the Hoover commission members, at the time they submitted their proposals, estimated it would require 10 years to accomplish 60 per cent of the reforms. Harder going is predicted for the rest of the program, including the proposals now before congress. These are programs for reorganization of the postoffice department, department of agriculture overhaul, enfolding of nearly all federal hospitals under a united medical administration, and a plan for decentralizing the hiring of skilled personnel so that agencies may pick their own people subject to civil service standards. It is estimated if the remainder of the commission proposals are adopted the eventual savings will amount to three billion dollars a year, but a lot of vested political interests are involved in which members of congress of both parties are entwined. Public education and more public education are called for.
