Manual Advises Teachers On Alcohol EducationIn instructing Utah school children of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and narcotics, teachers should not resort to imagination, exaggeration or isolated cases to frighten children, according to a teaching manual issued Sunday by the state superintendent of public instruction.The advice was contained in a new booklet prepared for the guidance of teachers in Utah public schools.State law requires each school district to give pupils instruction in the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and narcotic drugs.Factual ApproachThe new manual emphasizes the importance of adopting a factual approach rather than emotional in teaching children the results of misuse of alcohol.Citing differences in attitudes toward the use of liquor, the manual urges teachers to display factual honesty without bias. Alcohol education improperly taught may develop into an unmanageable controversial issue, the instructions state. There may be a possibility of developing a loss of respect for home environment or a loss of faith in the instructor if the problem is not taught according to certain approaches. The pamphlet stresses the importance of teaching from a positive aspect. Set Good Example Developing a desire to be well, physically and emotionally; to be able to get and keep a job; to have a happy home and marriage; to be1 a skilled driver, marksman or athlete and the possibilities of placing these positive factors in jeopardy should be considered from a scientific and experimental viewpoint, the pamphlet continues.Teachers also are urged to set an example for their students by following the accepted standards in their own recreation. If students see a faculty member at a public dance who has been drinking, such an experience will undermine their respect for the teacher and thevalue of his teaching will be greatly minimized, the instructions note.The booklet also warns teachers against making extravagant and unscientific claims in an effort to persuade young people that they should not smoke.Adequate Reason Surely there are adequate reasons from the standpoint of personal hygiene, physical health, emotional health and expense, why young people should be encouraged to avoid the tobacco habit, the manual observes. For educators to exaggerate those effects in face of widespread use of tobacco is apt to result in complete disregard of all advice and produce exactly the opposite effect from the one desired. Teachers were urged to stress the cost of alcohol and tobacco as a deterrent to their use. The pamphlet notes that the per capita expenditure in Utah for wine, beer, liquor and tobacco amounts to 48.06 per year.
