8B THE OGDEN UTAH STANDARD EXAMINERWEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 13, 1951Ogden Grocer Made KnightBy Queen of NetherlandsAn Ogden grocer who came penniless and alone when 12 years old yesterday received one of the highest honors bestowed by his native country of Holland.Gerard Jerry Klomp, 2370 Madison, was made a knight in the Order of Oranje Nassau through order of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.Mr. Klomp, president of the National Association of Retail Grocers, received the knighthood from Dr. J. B. V. M. J. van de Mortel, consul general of the Netherlands. It was presented during the 53rd convention of the association in Chicago.Sent by Widowed MotherMr. Klomp was sent to America by his widowed mother who wanted him to have the advantages of the new world. He arrived at Ellis island with barely the minimum amount of cash required for entry.He went to school for a time and then worked for a few dollars a week in an Ogden grocery store. He had saved almost enough to send for his mother when he received word that she had died.He later opened a modest grocery store of his own.Van de Mortel said the honor is in recognition of Klomps service to exhibitors from the Netherlands during the recent international food exposition in Chicago.Mr. Klomp also was cited for his leadership in the food industry.A leader in civic, church, business and educational affairs for many years, he has operated his own business here for 30 years. He was elected to his present position a year ago.Mr. and Mrs. Klomp have two sons and two daughters, Gerard J. Klomp, and Spencer J. Klomp of Ogden and Mrs. Vallone S. Vick ers, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Douglas Quayle, South Dakota.He has maintained fluent use of his native language.
