Show Salt Lake Tribune 1951 Children Hurl Snowballs In Atlanta Winter Visit CHICAGO, March 13 (UP) Winter storms, striking with spring only a week away, pushed snow and slush across the midwest and deep into Dixie Tuesday. Traces of snow fell at New Orleans but melted as soon as they hit the ground. At Atlanta, Ga., there was enough for school children to make snowballs. Pres. Harry S Truman took one looks at the dismal rain falling at Key West, Fla., and ducked back intot he little White House to work on state papers. It was the first time the president had missed a beach visit since he started his vacation. 58 Still Stranded At Jackson, Minn., four buses carrying 58 passengers remained stuck in snow drifts for the second day. most passengers were staying at hotels but 12 air force men and sailors were sleeping in the jail. Those running low on funds also were being fed at the jail. Snow fell in Kentucky and at Mobile, Ala., and Jackson, Miss. Ben L. Harrison, candidate for president of the University of Mississippi student body, canceled his publicity seeking parachute jump because of a snow storm. Chill weather in the Rio Grande valley of Texas put frost of the tomato vines and startled growers worrying about new losses. Iowa, hardest hit of Midwestern states, floundered in two feet of snow that had closed hundreds of schools. Officials at Des Moines, a city of 180,000, found that only 2787 persons braved the now to vote in a school election Monday. Two trucks carrying curcus elephants were stopped at Spencer, Ia., by bad roads. The state legislature at Des Moines was stymied by the absence of many lawmakers. Plows Kill Two Snowplows killed tow persons in Minnesota, and at Minneapolis another chunk of roof of the Willilams arena at the University of Minnesota collapsed. Two workmen were injured Monday when a large section of roof broke under a heavy blanket of snow. No one was hurt Tuesday. At Omaha, packing house workers called off a wage freeze protest demonstration because of bad weather. Rural schools were closed in some sections of Nebraska and telephone service was crippled. |
