Show The Salt Lake TribuneWednesday Morning, October 3, 1951Established April 15, 1871. Issued every morning by The Salt Lake Tribune Publishing Co., Salt Lake City, UtahMr. Glades 2 Good Terms Call for AnotherSalt Lake City has been fortunate to have Earl J. Glade at the head of its municipal government during the last seven critical years. During this period the city has busted at the seams with population pressures, spilling out into the county. In the wake of the depression public works were necessarily neglected during the war and now improvements are urgently needed. At the same time the period is one of economic peril, as the cost of federal government mounts almost beyond the ability of the taxpayers to support it. Mayor Glade stands forthrightly and courageously for municipal public works, but has wisely refused to go overboard. He favors completion of a municipal master plan calling for freeways, arterial highways, parks, recreation facilities and proper zoning, but he op poses bonding the city beyond a conservative point. Visionary and expensive municipal public works at this time conceivably could be the back breaking straw while the nation is rearming and endeavoring to help support all the free world. When so much is needed by the thriving, growing city it is not easy for a city executive to steer a middle course. Mayor Glade deserves credit for keeping his feet on the ground, but encouraging progress. The first mayor to be reelected since Salt Lake City adopted the commission form of government, Earl J. Glade now bids for a third four year term. Articulate and personable, he looks and acts like a mayor of a progressive city and he has done Salt Lake City credit on many public occasions. Making speeches and officiating at ceremonies are among a mayors duties. Mayor Glade has discharged these public relations responsibilities with brilliance and discrimination. Assuming leadership, he has done much to overcome the basic weaknesses of the commissionform of government. Mayor Glade stands fearlessly for clean, progressive government. His honesty matches his forthrightness and likable personality.Mayor Glades varied professional background qualifies him for leadership in Utahs leading city. Well educated, he taught and administered business education courses at both Brigham Young University and the University of Utah before entering the advertising business. Later he did notable pioneer work in the field of radio. His civic contributions have been extensive. The fact that nobody filed for the mayoralty candidacy before the deadline last night attests to the strength and popularity of the incumbent official. While it is possible that a write in candidate might emerge from the primaries, it is highly improbable. Salt Lake City seems assured the continuous service of its competent mayor. |
