Presenting Advanced Placement Credit in American History or suitable transfer courses from other institutions, or 3. Passing a special examination administered before the end of the second week of each quarter under the direction of the Dean of the School of Arts, Letters and Science. If this option is completed then the Social Science requirement is reduced to 9 credit hours. Bachelor of Arts Requirements—In addition to the foregoing requirements concerning total hours, upper division work, majors, minors, residency, and specific courses, a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts shall complete, as general education area requirements, at least 40 credit hours in the four areas of Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. These hours shall be proportioned as follows: at least 15 credit hours in the Humanities with courses selected from at least four groups; at least 12 credit hours in the Social Sciences; at least 9 credit hours in the combined areas of the Life Sciences and the Physical Sciences, with at least one course in each area. In addition, women students shall complete one approved course in the Department of Family Life. A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one approved foreign language. A maximum of 15 college credits from high school may count toward filling the foreign language requirement, provided the student can pass an examination to demonstrate his knowledge of the subject. Transfer credit from another institution will be recognized without an examination. Bachelor of Science Requirements—In addition to the requirements concerning total hours, upper division work, majors, minors, residency, and specific courses, a candidate for a Bachelor of Science shall complete, as general education area requirements, at least 40 credit hours in the four areas of Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Second Baccalaureate Degree—A student may qualify for admission to a second baccalaureate degree following the completion of a first baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution. Admission to a second baccalaureate degree program must be approved by the Admissions Committee prior to registration for this program. Application forms for a second baccalaureate degree may be obtained in person or by mail from the Admissions Office. To qualify for the second degree, the student must complete a full year of residence and a minimum of 45 credit hours with a grade point average of at least 2.0, in addition to whatever requirements he may have completed for the first baccalaureate degree. GENERAL EDUCATION The General Education program described in the following sections is required of all students who receive a bachelor degree from Weber State College. Satisfaction of Area Requirements by Examination—All students are eligible to take special qualifying area tests. The battery of tests used is the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Scores satisfactory to the College will be accepted in lieu of required course work in the area. An acceptable score in an area test will allow a student to receive 12 hours of credit in addition to waiving the course requirement in that area. Forty- eight credit hours is the maximum hours that can be earned by high achievement in the area examinations. These examinations are administered by the Counseling and Testing Center, SP206. Satisfaction of Requirements by Advanced Placement Courses—Students who have completed advanced placement courses in high school and passed the Educational Testing Service examinations with acceptable scores 5-4-3, will be granted 12 hours of credit for each, and will be given general education credit where applicable. Transfer Credit in General Education—Students who transfer from State supported institutions in Utah, automatically clear the College's general education program if they have completed requirements outlined by the former institution- Transfer students who are not in the previously described classification need to carefully review the general education requirements listed in this catalog. 48 49 |
