Individually Prescribed Program—To be built from any of the WILKITs in the program irrespective of the course block in which they are contained. Practicum in Learning Skills—(Formerly Teaching Remedial III) Working with children having learning difficulties. Prerequisite: Education 465 and 466, or instructor's consent. (3-9) 487. Directed Experiences with Students—Directed experiences with elementary and secondary school students in cooperating schools. Students may register for one unit of credit per quarter for a maximum of three quarter hours. A W S (1) 488. Teaching Practicum in Elementary Education—Supervised teaching in elementary schools. This block begins with a concentrated one-week preparation session followed by a school assignment where all prior aspects of the student's training are tried in the actual classroom and checked for effectiveness. International Aerospace Education Workshop—A nontechnical approach to aviation, space, and American and international power. Lectures and symposia by internationally known leaders in education, social science, military, and world affairs. Outdoor Educational Workshop—A broad inter-disciplinary approach to the methodology of outdoor education teaching techniques. Su. (3) 495. Teaching Practicum in Secondary Education—Laboratory experience set in the public schools. The block begins with a concentrated one-week preparation session followed by experience in a school assignment. WILKITs on related areas are to be taken concurrently with the field assignment. Includes: (1) Seminars with other students in the program. (2) Advanced WILKITs on professionalism, psychology of learning and group processes, (3) Assignments to work with students in earlier phases of the teacher education program as group leaders or evaluators, and (4) Supplementary or remedial work in education or academic teaching fields as suggested by a careful evaluation of the field experience performance. Synthesis of the Secondary Teaching Program—Intended to serve as a synthesis of experiences in the secondary education program including the field experience. Four areas of activity are involved: (1) seminars with other senior education students; (2) WILKITs in Techniques of Educational Research, Professional Rights and Relations of Teachers, and Group Processes; (3) assignments to work with students in earlier stages of the teacher education program as group leaders, evaluators, or advisors; and (4) supplementary or remedial work in education or academic teaching fields as suggested by a careful evaluation of the field experience performance. Ferrin, Chairman Students preparing to teach in the elementary schools, kindergarten through grade six, major in elementary education and will graduate from the School of Education. Elementary school teachers' certificates are also valid in Utah junior high schools provided the individual has a major and a minor, or composite major in subjects taught on the junior high school level. An adviser from the Department of Elementary Education will be assigned each prospective teacher. It is to the student's advantage that he begin planning his program early in the freshman year.
