Show Allied Health Sciences — Nursing Allied Health Sciences — Nursing COURSES OF INSTRUCTION 101, 102. Foundations of Nursing—It has been recognized in nursing education that there is a certain core of content which is basic to all nursing. Therefore, this is the initial course for both associate degree nursing and practical nursing students. The nature of nursing, the trends in nursing education, and the role, preparation and function of the technical nurse are introduced. The content is planned to meet the human needs which are: safety, activity, rest and comfort, oxygen, hygiene, elimination, nutrition, self-actualization and affiliation. These needs, along with problem solving communication, become threads in the entire nursing curriculum. The course is developed on the broad basis of self-understanding as a prerequisite to understanding and helping others. A sequence of planned learning experiences is provided to help the student identify simple nursing problems related to the basic needs of people. Five lecture hours and three 5-hour laboratory periods a week. A (10) 111, 112. Basic Medical-Surgical Nursing—Emphasis is placed on meeting the basic human needs of patients through an increased development of nursing skills based on an understanding of principles and facts relative to common pathological processes, diagnostic procedures, and specialized equipment. A sequence of planned learning experiences is provided to help the student identify common, recurring nursing problems as generalized concepts which become threads in the entire nursing curriculum. Nursing assessment is incorporated into theory and practicum. Six lectures hours and three 6-hour laboratory periods a week. W S (12) 121, 122. Maternal and Child Nursing—Emphasis is placed on meeting basic human needs of the family throughout the childbearing cycle and the care of children. Increased development of nursing skills is based on an understanding of principles and facts relative to these aspects of the life cycle. A sequence of planned learning experiences is provided to help the student identify the individualized care of family members. Six lecture hours and three 6-hour laboratory periods a week. Nursing of Children and Adults —These courses are three interrelated rotations designed to develop a knowledge of principles which can be applied when planning and giving care to various age groups with more complex health problems. Opportunities are provided for the student to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care of patients with an alteration of their basic needs. Concurrent theory and guided clinical experiences are planned in medical, surgical, pediatric, and psychiatric nursing in various settings. Four lecture hours and three 5-hour laboratory periods a week. A W S (9-9-9) COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM Weber State College and Utah Technical College/SLC Jean Larsen, Coordinator Instructors, Mary Jane Williams, Diane Frederisy Weber State College, in cooperation with Utah Technical College, has extended the Associate Degree Nursing Program to Salt Lake City. The Associate of Science Degree is conferred by Weber State College. Students who are Utah residents are admitted to the two- year program. The student completes general education requirements and nursing classes at Utah Technical College and the laboratory experience for nursing classes is obtained from the various health agencies in the Salt Lake area. Registration takes place at UTC/SLC unless there are unusual circumstances. Deadline for applying is February 24 and and selection of students is made by April 1st.
