Show DR. VAN DELLEN WRITES Insulin Holds First Place In Control of Diabetesmakes it particularly valuable in the treatment of diabetic emergencies such as acidosis or coma.It also is used when the diabetic needs surgery and the physician is unable to prescribe a diet immediately because of postoperative nausea. Here is a matter of giving insulin to cover the exact amount of food that has been consumed. As appetite improves and the menus are increased the dosage of insulin becomes larger.Merely More RefinedCrystalline zinc insulin is more refined yet identical with regular insulin. It is less likely to produce an allergic reaction. Protamine zinc insulin is made by adding to regular insulin the protein, protamine which delays absorption of the insulin. This means that it will last longer after being injected under the skin.It is excellent for diabetic who require a small but constant supply of insulin; one shot lasts 24 to 48 hours. Globin insulin is absorbed more slowly than regular insulin but more rapidly than protamine; it lasts from eight to twelve hours.Insulin still remains the most potent weapon against diabetes despite the fact that it controls but does not cure the disease. The lives of millions of diabetics have been prolonged and, in addition, they can compete on a par with the rest of us.Insulin is destroyed by the enzymes in the gastro intestinal tract and loses its potency when taken orally. Medical research has been trying to obviate this difficulty since insulin was discovered.Attempts have been made to incorporate the hormone into hundreds of other substances in the hope that the gastric juices will not destroy it. This is why insulin must be injected. Many claims have been made to the contrary but they are fraudulent.Responsible Factor The original insulin regular contains 10 inert protein which is the factor responsible for the occasional allergic manifestations. But for many diabetics, regular insulin still is the old reliable. It acts rapidly but the effect |
