Show OBITUARY Annie L. Mathews, age 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 6, 1996 at Manor Care Nursing Center after a long illness. She was born March 15, 1908 in Houston, Texas, a daughter of Maggie Josey and Joe Watson. She was reared in Houston, Texas and graduated from Washington High School with honors, and attended Wylie College in Marshall, Texas. In December of 1928 she married Vernon E. Smith, they were later divorced. She married Oliver Mathews in 1964 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death in 1973. Annie moved to Ogden in 1978 with her daughter = son-inlaw Donald Cope. _ Annie had been a member of i thee Mae kK. Adams BPOEIks #1343 and had been a member of the Eastern Star in Los Phigeles, California before moving to Utah. Annie was a very kind, loving and gentle person ‘ind would go out of her way to do things for others. She loved to converse with others and had a wonderful sense of humor. | ae She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1955. She was the first black telephone operator in Houston, Texas. ‘She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. | The gift of love is a cherished treasure whose value cannot be diminished by the separation of the soul. ‘Such treasures will always remain precious in the hearts and minds of the loving people she left behind. To cherish in her loving memory are her loving daughter and son-in-law, Belle (Donald) Cope, Ogden, Utah; granddaughters Antoinette Goodie, Los Angeles, California; Rosalyn Phillips Haywood, Ogden, Utah; great grandchildren, Stephanie Jennifer and Jason Goodie, Los Angeles, California; Amber Peters and Andrew Leontra Hill, Ogden, Utah; Eva M. Albert, loving cousin of Los Angeles, California. She is also iavrived by her faithful pets Polo and Prince. She was preceded in death by her son Vernon E. Smith and grandson Andrew Phillips.
