Show large and spacious and accommodated our family as well as my older brothers when then they chose to come up and stay overnight. THE HERMITAGE We were only about a block or two down from the Heritage Park. We could see the large Hermitage Hotel very well from home as it was high on the mountain. It was run by Mr. Wilson. They had the Union Pacific Railroad bring up cars filled with tourists from the east to see the canyon. The tourists would travel up as far as the artesian wells. The wells were quite a sight for them to see. The wells were beautiful with flowing, almost 100%-pure drinking water. The wells are now covered by the dam. My sister and I often walked through the canyon from one camp to the other along the highway. Then, there was a wall protecting the drivers from the river. This beautiful wall was made of rocks. Over the years, it had deteriorated some from weather, accidents, etc. Parts of it had to be replaced with large cement barriers. As river water ran back of our summer home, we had many enjoyable times with a flat boat that our dad provided for us. Dad would bank the water up with rocks so it would be deep enough for us to enjoy ourselves in the boat. When we were older, we would go up to the Hermitage Park which at that time had bathhouses. People would come up from Ogden and the surrounding areas to swim in the dam. There were some beautiful swimmers--some of the elite people of Ogden. The young men and women had the privacy of the bathhouses in which to dress. Sometimes we would go into the water. I never could swim very well, but I could float on my back. When I think back, I was really brave to be trying to float around in the water which was anywhere from 10 to 20 feet deep, but I survived and enjoyed it. They also had at the Hermitage Park a dance hall. A very fine orchestra would come up and play at the dance hall each night. My sister, Ida, some of our friends, and I would go to the north side of the dance hall, stand on the tables and look in to watch them dancing. This was a very enjoyable thing for us to do. We always loved the beauty of the canyon and it has a very dear place in our memory. At that time, our nephew, Richard, was living with us. Often when we would walk the canyon road in the evening, he would go up and back with us. I think that he felt by escorting us that he was helping to keep us secure. There was no one to bother us even at 12:00 midnight-quite different from what it is today. We did have memorable and good times together. |
