Show didn't want any pay for helping me out....I guess I knew more than I realized because that evening I ran off two large reels and two small ones all taken by Arlene and Joe. We had Milton and Florence and their family come and see them." November 23, 1943 THANKFUL Madeleine to Vern: "I am so grateful for all the many, many blessings, wonderful blessings, I have received all of my life. I can truthfully say I have been most contented and happily married. I realize more than ever before that it has been your wonderful sweet disposition and tender kind ways that have made me a very happy wife. I indeed feel I am most fortunate and blessed to have you for my husband". (Speaking of the Ward members in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho who welcomed and accepted all the servicemen and their families Madeleine writes): "Weren't all of those people grand to us though?" May 1944 A SISTER'S LOVE FOR HER BROTHER, MILTON MARRIOTT Madeleine to Vern: "I called on Milton today. They brought him home from the hospital last night. His case seems to have Dr. Hancock stumped. He now says he has a low grade of pneumonia and that it will take plenty of rest and time to put him on his feet. You can imagine how he must feel being as active as he has been. Florence said that it might be three months before he can be up and doing." May 21, 1944 CANYON MEMORIES Madeleine to Vern: "We surely did have some wonderful times up in our canyon home. Everything was so modern and up to the minute. Just think of the furnace that never had to be touched-no ashes, coal, etc. Just push the thermostat and all was well. Then, too, I think often of the many parties we had and what enjoyable times we had entertaining our friends. They were good clean times enjoyed by all and no one had to drink to have a good time either. That is surely the only kind of life to live. I think of the nights after you had played a dance job and we would look at a new roll of film twice before going to bed." May 22, 1944 Madeleine to Vern: "Today I started making my second dress. You see the Singer Company is giving me eight lessons free on account of the electric sewing machine Mother bought last Fall. I had already paid for a course of lessons from them. These I have had. Now I am starting on the free courses today. Aunt Esther says she will give me lessons (too). I would like to take from her because she is excellent". May 23, 1944 WELCOMED IN THE MARRIOTT HOME |
