Show MONEY is NOT THE TREASURE Madeleine explains: "Well Vern, I had never cashed Mr. Buscher's cashier check he gave for us. So yesterday, I was able to talk with him alone. (Mr. Bushcher was Vern's employer immediately before Vern entered the military. He became a family friend, too). I told him I hadn't cashed it and just how you and I felt about it--that we appreciated him giving us this but felt he had done so much we couldn't feel right about accepting it. He said that he didn't give it to us for the reason of 'trying to get even with him' or 'paying him back' but because he wanted to do it. He said he didn't want to make us feel uncomfortable about it and said that he knew how you felt about it but wanted me to keep it. He said he wouldn't take it back. He said there was very little he or others could do for the boys in the service who are fighting this war for us. Then he said: I can't take my money with me and what is the since of somebody fighting over it after I am gone. I could see he wanted us to have this money. So I thanked him again." June 21, 1943 VERN'S RESPECT FOR HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW Madeleine writes: "Just now I finished reading to Mother what you said concerning how much you appreciated her. I just couldn't help cry and Mother had tears brimming over in her eyes. She said, 'Vern is such an appreciative boy for everything and notices everything done.' Darn it, how I wish you could be home!" July 23, 1943 OPPOSITION IN ALL THINGS Vern was allowed to come home for a few days after Jerry was born. Even thought the Red Cross had written that Madeleine was is serious danger at the birth of there first child and all military officers had approved of his going, a chaplain held up the process. Finally, the chaplain relented and allowed Vern to come home for a few days. After Vern had returned to the San Diego Naval Training Station he received this letter from Madeleine: "My Honey dear, You didn't make me feel uncomfortable about what you did for me. It was you I felt sorry for having to do so many unpleasant things. I felt like I wanted you more than anyone else to do for me. You were certainly a dear to do all you did for me in such a sweet way that I'll never forget. Really, won't it be fun when you can start giving Jr. trumpet lessons? Mother said his lips are always set to stay right in playing just like his daddy. I do hope we can select a name soon as everyone asks what his name is. This baby, when he can see, is going to look at his Daddy's picture everyday and he had better say 'Daddy' when he says his very first word. And his Mama is going to teach him to say (that) when he looks at your picture. I am ever so proud of you and just know in a way all your own that you can be a marvelous influence on the various boys you come in contact with. This new boy from the East and how you are getting him interested in the church activities |
