Show Alice. Both couples were married after they moved to San Francisco. Orion and Charlotte were married before Christmas and decided to spend their honeymoon vacationing with their relatives in Ogden. For 40 years thereafter, they came home to Ogden each Christmas except for one year. Orion and Charlotte would stay in the canyon home with Vern and me when they were visiting here. They were so generous to us in charging little rent and then in offering to sell the canyon home to us, but money was tight and we were not able to purchase it. The canyon home has been sold several times since; but about 1994, it sold to a California transplant for $130,000. The current owner is in the roofing business and was so pleased to meet Ida and myself one day as we were taking a ride in the canyon. He stated that he appreciated the quality of workmanship exhibited in the original construction of the house. The JOY of CANYON LIVING We lived in the house in the spring, summer, and fall for two years. About 193 6 my brothers installed a brand new furnace that they had converted to burn heating oil. A pipe ran from this tank outside and up to within a few feet of the highway where fuel oil was delivered by truck when needed. We felt it was the most perfect type of heating anyone could have. We both worked each day in Ogden, and when we came home, the house was always comfortable. We lived there from June 1934 to November 1942 when my husband auditioned for and was accepted into a U.S. Navy Band during World War II. I was expecting my first child and so moved to my parent's home. My brother sold the canyon home. I am not aware what renovations may have taken place over the years. Each Christmas morning when we were living in the canyon home, we could depend on three to five telephone calls from Shirley wanting to know how soon we would be down so we could open Christmas presents. She was always excited and elated with what she received. CHRISTENSENS, DENTS, LOFGREENS, NEWMANS We often invited the friends we made in the new ward (18th), Vera and Leslie Christensen, Edna and Rudger Dent, Bishop Grant and Bea Lofgreen, and Stenca and Lee Newman to our canyon home where we would enjoy visiting. The first baby to attend was Vera and Les's baby, Carol. She would sleep |
