Show The secretary was Enid Poorte who was exceptionally capable. She had a special way of handling the students who took ill or who didn't want to go to school. The students had a great respect for her. Martin Spangler was custodian. He made it so interesting for the children as he had honeybee hives. I purchased honey from him for our home use. Martin devised a tube through which the bees could come in and out from outside. It was located near a hallway window where the children could see the and bees doing their work in the hive. Walter Thompson was also a custodian who provided a good help to the students and lunch workers. The student population was so large that the school needed to build more classrooms. Some of the clay, removed by huge carry-all trucks, was delivered to our house and the home to the east. We were able to extend the property at the back and provide a foundation for the topsoil for our lawns. All the school lunches were governed by the state. Horace Mann had a tradition for quality and even some of the high school students would come and purchase a ticket to eat lunch there. Special meals were prepared for the various holidays. All of the years Lowell attended Horace Mann, I was working in the lunch room. All together I worked about fifteen years in the school lunch program before retiring. At Christmastime, the lunch workers would gather one evening for a Christmas party at the home of one the workers. For several years after I retired, I was invited to attend. Because I was working part-time, my wages were little compared to the full-time workers. But I was grateful for the amount I made and took care of it. My wages were deposited in the bank, and at times, my savings helped Vern and I immensely. When our sons served their L.D.S. missions, this money helped us support them financially. FAMILY GENEALOGIST I have been so very pleased to see three professionally prepared books published on three lines of my family genealogy. I did all I could in collecting photographs, preparing family group sheets, pedigrees records, and writing histories and sketches of family members to have our side of the families represented in these major books: "The Marriotts: Workers of Flock and Field", "The English Ancestry and the America Posterity of Joseph Southwick", and "The Malan Family Book of Remembrance Volumes I and II." In the Spring of 1996 I completed writing the two separate histories of my Father and Mother. These histories were sent to all of the living grandchildren and great grandchildren. |
