Show have the challenge, family and friends, to be able to look for these wonderful qualities in other people and try to obtain them for ourselves so that when we do face our Lord that maybe He will be able to look at us and call us blessed and be grateful for our works of righteousness. I am so thankful this day for the opportunity that we have to be part of this family and part of this wonderful heritage, and I say this in the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ, Amen. MICHAEL F. GATES, Reading two early poems of Madeleine's I, too, am part of the Harrop family but an adopted member. I became a very close friend of Jerry's in junior high school and that friendship has remained very fast right on up through today. So I spent a great deal of time at the Harrop's and consequently came to know not only Jerry of course, but his brother, Lowell, and Madeleine, and Vern. And certainly if there is such a thing as a second family, Madeleine is my second Mother and Vern my second Father, and Jerry and Lowell my second brothers. I currently teach English in Salt Lake and I think as part of teaching English, poetry is something that is very important to all of us, and I think that we are all poets. So I delighted when Jerry and Lowell asked me to read several poems that Madeleine had written. The first poem is the Madeleine that Patriarch Norton spoke about, the young Madeleine Marriott, and in this particular poem, I think you will notice the romantic earnestness. It's entitled "Moonlight Bliss". MOONLIGHT BLISS The moon casts mellow light across the brook, And roses in the garden upward look. The rose leaves nestle 'round each dewy rose Sharp thorns stand out to fight against her foes Green ferns and fragile cosmos droop and sway. They kiss the water in a silent way. Intoxicating breezes seem to lure Each sleeping flower with a gentle stir. A far-off nightingale is heard to sigh As the moon drifts further in the star-lit sky. It's glimm'ring rays reveal in peaceful bliss Two youthful lovers in a good-night kiss. --Madeleine Marriott |
