Show From her Uncle-To Madeleine: In this world I gained my knowledge, And for it I had to pay; Though I never went to college, Yet I've heard the poet say That life was like a mighty ocean Rolling on from day to day; Men are vessels launched upon it, Sometimes wrecked and cast away. It is easy enough to be pleasant When life flows along like a song; But the one worth while is the one who will smile When everything goes wrong. -Arthur J. Miller LIFE in CALIFORNIA When Madeleine was in Los Angeles staying with her first cousin June Gibson Franklyn and June's husband, Perry, she received the following message from here Mother, Mary Marriott. "We surely miss you at home, oh so much. It seems strange not to see Vern coming up the walk anymore and not having my daughter come to bid me good night, and while we all miss you so dreadfully much, we are happy in the thought that you are where something may be done for your health and that is a big thing if you can only get well." Mary continues in her letter: "I think June and Perry are mighty nice to do so much for us." August 1929 Vern had come to the Marriott home to visit and Madeleine's sister Ida wrote: "He is going to Boise, Idaho, with the U. P. (Union Pacific) Band to compete with a group of bandstwo from Los Angeles....He said he couldn't sleep at all the night you called him up. I think that he felt mighty blue for you....He told me that he hadn't been anyplace since you left for California. I can tell he is simply wild about you, because every time I talked about you, he wanted to talk, too, about you!" September 5, 1929 LONGING to RECEIVE MAIL Vern wanted to receive a letter from Madeleine everyday she was away, and so he wrote: "Have you had your fingers stepped on? If you want, I'll send you a ream of paper, envelopes, and a bottle of ink if it will help matters any." (He wanted to be with Madeleine even if it meant he needed to leave his work in Ogden).
