Show OGDEN L.D.S. 7th WARD Madeleine was present at the dedication ceremony February 14, 1914. Presiding was President Joseph F. Smith, who "expressed surprise and delight" at the beautiful new building and stated that it was the best church building for its size that they had seen. The Chapel had stained glass windows with notations: Presented by the Relief Society, High Priests, the Seventies, etc. The round, south stained glass window, featuring the boy Jesus about age 12, was presented by the Bishopric. An Estey reed pump organ along with the piano were in the chapel. Four of the musicians were Ida Marriott and her friend, Dorothy Little Read, Sister DeLamater and Karl Posnier. (Ida wrote that music was played as the Sacrament was being passed. Also, as Sunday School opening exercises finished, the organists would play march music as the people separated to class work. Later, a Hammond organ was installed on the stand under the mural and toward the back of the stand. It was common for the piano, which was on the main floor to the east, and the organ to be played together. On the upper part of the north wall going up to the ceiling was a beautiful mural depicting a shepherd looking up toward an angel flying over head and depicting the scripture in Revelations 14:6, The Relief Society room and classrooms were in the basement below the chapel. About 30 years later, an amusement hall was added to the west of the chapel. The furnace, kitchen, Jr. Sunday School, Scout room and additional classrooms were in the basement below the recreation hall which contained a large dance floor and stage. |
