Show French bread, white bran cookies and milk. Bought Laura Secord Candies (quality like See's). Ida bought white chocolates, and Lowell bought two records by Nana Mouskouri." June 2, 1981 "At Montreal, stayed at the International Hotel Palace Bonaventure-beautiful sunken gardens in hotel lobby. Rode subway. A beautiful city of about 3 millions people. Ate lamb for dinner. McGill College and University of Quebec at Montreal with 38,000 enrolled. 3/4th's of the people speak French. 2nd only to Paris in the number of French-speaking people in a large city. Left city about 3:00 p.m. and drove in Providence of Ontario on the way to Ottawa where the National Parliament is located. Saw the House of Commons in session. Took a boat ride on the waterway Rideau Canal which divides the city. It was built to defend against British invasion but never used for Canadian defense. It is drained in winter to prevent freezing and used for ice staking. Went shopping at the Hudson Bay Department Store." June 3, 1981 "Visited Peter Whitmer Farm in New York, saw Joseph Smith Family Home, the Sacred Grove, and the Hill Cumorah. Stayed at the Marriott in Rochester." June 5, 1981 ABOVE THE WATER "At Niagara Falls, Jerry and I took a ride in a helicopter and became members of the "Over-the-Falls-Club". Lowell had a headache and Ida did not want to go in the helicopter. We all had a boat ride under the falls. In Palmyra we saw the Grandin Building where the Book of Mormon was first printed and the Martin Harris Farm." June 6, 1981 A BIRTHDAY SURPRISE "On this day, my birthday, we were visited at our home by the future Governor of Utah, Norm Bangerter. He was campaigning by walking the neighborhoods in Ogden with several other Republican elected officials and candidates and stopped at our home. Vern and I were cleaning the house, Lowell was working in the attic, and Jerry was clearing the jungle down the hill. The future Governor liked the view of Ogden which he saw from the backyard of our property." October 23, 1983 THE FARLEY FAMILY Eva Farley Clayton to Madeleine: "These past few months, I have been delving into family histories again with my brother's granddaughter who is still working on her Masters at the University of Utah. I wish I had her drive and ambition, but she will soon be writing her thesis. One of her assignments had been a study of family values over five generations, and she chose the Farley line. She has done a tremendous amount of research starting with the first Farley in America. |
