Show how to handle my arm and massage it without it being painful to me. Then he set up a schedule as to when I was to return for treatments. After two or three visits, he said he had an exercise class for his patients and that I aught to come and use the hand spring pulls. He told me to attempt to sweep the floors at home to help the arm to move. After about a year, my arm was greatly improved. I will always be grateful to C. J. A. Lindquist and Dr. John J. Nugent for their concern and help. WEBER COLLEGE SCHOOL of BEAUTY Occasionally, as the factories needed young people to help when the berry season was on, I would work in a factory preparing the fruit so that it could be washed and canned. When I was a little older and finger waving became popular, the neighbors would come and ask me to set their hair; but I got very little pay for doing this. I recall picking berries with Mother on Orion's lot one time, and I talked with her about what kind of work I might do. I wondered if it would be good to attend beautician school as I seemed to be able to do that work well. She told me to inquire of other people for their opinions and that would help me make up my mind. She said this must be my decision, but she thought this was a good plan as I seemed apt in styling people's hair. I entered the first class offered at Weber College's Beauty Culture and Hair Cutting School and was one of the first students to enroll. I enjoyed my studies. The theory work was interesting along with the actual practice on people who came to the school with various requests: hair styling, marcelling, manicures, facials, etc. I was kept busy because I already had a knack for finger waving. Our instructor was Marge Statton, a very knowledgeable and pleasant person who was a licensed instructor. The students had to fill the requirements for the courses and take the State of Utah test at the Capitol Building in Salt Lake City. I took Ida and did her hair as part of my examination to obtain a Beautician's License. Before finishing my course at Weber, I was offered work at Darrel's Beauty Shop located in the First Security Bank Building. I was in the first graduating class in that science. Along with other departments at the college, we were the first to hold a ceremony at the old Weber College campus on 25th Street near Jefferson Avenue. Some of the other operators at Darrell's were Katy Ervin, and twins Mildred and Naomi Blaylock. Some of my customers were Dr. Wilson's wife, Laura Eisenberg, and Katherine Thomas Brady. Cost of a permanent wave was $1 and up. |
