Show would hurry and get the names of those we wanted to dance with, and so, of course, Madeleine was always on that list. We would have a great time in those days. We always reserved the first dance for our partner, the middle-hopefully a waltz-and of course, the last dance. If you didn't exchange dances, you were not considered to be very popular, and the girls didn't appreciate that. Over the years we met, exchanged ideas and thoughts, and expressed our friendship through many pleasant conversations. Of course I learned to appreciate the family as a whole. They are very musical as you know. Ida always amazed me all the time because she could play by ear, but, she didn't think it was good enough so she started taking lessons from Frederic Dixon so she could become even more competent. Then of course Jerry and Lowell, you all know about their music. So over the years, you see we have enjoyed that family. As has been indicated, Madeleine loved the gospel. I would like to bear her testimony for her. Now that may sound strange, but I did find it in her journal. She writes: "Living in a religious environment gave me the desire to have a Patriarchal Blessing which I received at the age of 11. I would read it often. I realized that in order to receive the blessings that were promised me, I needed to live a clean life, be prayerful, and seek the Lord in making decisions. It stated that if I lived a proper life, I would meet my life's companion who would be worthy to take me to the temple of the Lord. It has been an inspiration and guide to me in my life." And we know how blessed she was in having that companion. Then later she writes: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my callings in the Church and appreciate the instructions I received in a religious and spiritual way to help build a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I learned to appreciate the Prophet Joseph Smith and the other Church leaders who helped restore the gospel." So she was very spiritual. She loved the Lord, and she appreciated those who, like her, loved to go to Church. We all know that she is in good hands. About a year ago, when she was in the hospital, it so happened that my wife, Fern, was in the hospital to undergo a major operation, and she desired a blessing. So I went downstairs to get some oil, and who did I run into but the Harrop boys. Of course, I asked one of them to help me which he was so gracious in doing. So that was about the last formal time we met about a year ago. But this I do know-in this topsy-turvy world of ours, a world in which they refer to us Mormons as non-Christian, the gospel is true. Madeleine certainly knew this in her life. In closing I would like to read from Luke because this to me is a powerful testimony from the Savior himself above being resurrected-he being the first fruits |
